That's disgusting. But I can totally believe it. It amazes me that I see junior high girls wearing band-aids for skirts to school. I want to ask them 'how did you get out of the house like that?' And then I think 'their moms let them.'

My poor kid. She is going to think she has the squarest mother in the world.

Re: OMG

I work in middle school and it scares me sometimes. I mostly see it with the 8th graders (which is still too young!) than the 7th and 6th graders. Some of them have hickies (did I even spell that right?) and I was told about a 'couple' who touch each other in 'naughty places' during class!!!! Luckily I have such small groups that I don't have anything like that happen while they are with me! Don't even get me started on the skirts and tops. Bra straps shouldn't show! I've sent girls to the office b/c the skirt was so short I could see their underwear!

That's disturbing. Middle school was nothing like that for me.

Re: OMG

At my 6th grade dances most of the girls were on one side of the room and the boys were on the other!

I don't understand how parents let their children out dressed so inappropriately. I have a feeling that I'm going to be one of the stricter parents when I have kids.

Re: OMG

I actually saw a movie on lifetime that it was about kids in high school having sex, mainly oral sex. The girls were doing it to the boys and then there was a syphilis epidemic. One girl was fourteen and she already had like 15 partners. It's crazy. It worries me, I just hope things change when my daughter hits that age.

Someone I work with said a lot of the kids are having oral sex because they don't look at it as sex. She said her friends daughter got a veneral disease on her mouth and she was 14 years old!

I have talked very openly about this MANY times on here. This is a true problem. I am have found notes from students discussing who they wanted to do what to them. There was an incident at a bar mitzah a couple of years ago as well as some bj parties that the school became aware of after the fact. Or the group that came from one elementary school that the girls were part of a 'condom club'.

Sadly this is truly going on.

I got one for you. My sister was telling me last night that the boys in my niece's 1st grade class were asking her the color of her underwear.

Where do they learn this stuff so young? The Net or tv? I was CLUELESS when I was younger. (Sometimes I still am)!

Honestly think about the programs that were on when you were little and what you saw and think about what you see now! Besides according to my note writters- Clinton said it's not sex!

Re: OMG

We can't place all of the blame on the media. BUT, TV (not just cable) and a lot of movies are all very highly sexualized. You can't let kids have a steady visual diet of sexy music videos, sexy soap operas, and sexy nighttime TV and expect that they will not imitate what they see. It is a very true fact that we become what we behold (set our eyes on) most of the time.

Ack! I don't think I like that - my little sister is in 8th grade

My memories of 6th grade dances include girls on one side, boys on the other. With those few 'cool kids' who danced together... with about a foot of space between them.

I think i liked it that way

Although, when I was a senior, there was a middle school 'sex scandle' where the girls were giving guys blow jobs in the bathrooms...

One of our top memories in the yearbook was 'finding out that the middle schoolers were getting more action than you were'

Re: OMG

wow..that's scary, but not at all surprising. In my 6thg rade dance it was basically like you described though, girls on one side, boys on the other, but when people did dance it was 'reggae' style, as we called it then, basically grinding...ewww

in jr high I was pretty oblivious to people having sex, i don't really think too nay people were, if anyone. it was like 'ooh so and so made out with so and so' 'with tongue? wow'

In HS, I was actually oneof the more active kids early on b/c I had my first boyfriend freshman year, and yeah it's scary, but I didn't think of blowjobs as sex. And there were a lot of girls who went down on like dozens of guys and were like 'but I'm a virgin'... I don't know what made me think that way. I don't think it was TV or media. Hvaing been in hs as recently as 4 years ago, I've found that kids learn from each other. I didn't really learn anything from TV or the net, I mean maybe a few things I wanted to look up r was curious about, but as far as value systems and what' sex and what isn't, and what's appropriate when, you know I had to feel that out on my own and deal with it within my own culture of friends and boyfriends. So I don't think you can blame the media at all. Speaking as someoen who was recently in that kind of situation.I didn't feel pressured by the media to have sex or do anything, I didn't feel like the media told me what to do. by the time monica and bill rolled around, i had already had that 'not sex' so it wasn't that either. I'm babbling. What I want to say is that I don't know what it is, but I know it isn't the media. i think part of it may be that parents aren't really talking to thier kids openly about sex (not that they were before, but...when our parents were kids thre was a hug societal taboo about sex that there isnt really now since the sexual revolution)...i know my parents never really talked to me frankly about sex, they told me not before marriage, etc..but the culture we live in doesn't say that, just in general, and there was never any discussion of what a bj even was, much less if it's considered sex. I think all of this is a good argument for sex ed in schools, because these kidsare NOT getting it at home.

Re: OMG

Jenn,

I agree with you that you can't fully blame it on the media, that is not what I am saying. But knowing that I didn't see the images on TV then that I saw now made it more 'taboo' for me. Today people see it so much that they are desensitived to it, IMO. In 7th grade I remember calling my best friend and asking her what french kissing was, because I had no idea. Of course there were rumblings about certain people doing certain things but honestly there were so few of them.

The other things I have heard from the kids is that they are mimicing (sp?) what they are seeing their older siblings do.

I don't know the reason, I don't know the cause but I know it is horrible!

I had a child for detention yesterday, I had a sibling. The child was telling me about the fact that the sibling that I had has been smoking pot since the 6th grade and now sells it So sad, and this kids has to witness it. He was telling me things about them playing stoner basketball and other things.

They just truly know too much now! They go from toddler/kids to young adults with no time to enjoy the innocence at all. It's heart breaking!

Re: OMG

I don't have ids yet but, DH and I have discussed how we would like to raise our children. I think we will end up being more strict then anything. Which does not bother me because I would rather know about my kids then let them run all over me and talk to me the way they talk to some.

I was in the store the other day buying a few things and this child was creaming at his mother. 'I WANT THIS'. I turned and looked at him sternly. He looked at his mom and said 'Why is that strange women looking at me', she replied, 'because you are being nasty to mommy', he replied, 'BECAUSE YOU WON' GIVE ME WHAT I WANT NOW!'. I turned and looked sternly at him again. I thought the kid was going to POOP in his pants! I called DH and I told him and in the back ground he could hear the kid screaming, and DH said, ' Is that the kid?', I said 'Yup!'. Amazing!

I tell ya, I scared him with that stare, it was the same one my mom used. It scared me as a child. She did not even have to do anything, just look at me funny and I would wash the dishs for a month for her because I did something wrong.

Iust figured I would through that in.

Re: OMG

It seems like a lot of kids walk all over their parents nowadays. How I have seen kids treat their parents in the mall is appalling...and the parents always give in!
