OMG! Alternative to registering

OMG! Alternative to registering

I heard this thing on the radio this AM and was totally blown away.

The DJ had recently recieved an invite to a wedding, the wedding is in Jan. '08 - the couple explained the reason they were sending the invite out so early was that instead of registering they wanted asked their guest to 'sponsor' items at the wedding.

For example one guest could buy the cake, another could pay for a few dinners, or contribute towards a photographer etc.

I couldn't imagine asking my guests to 'sponsor a few dinners' at my wedding.

Has anyone ever heard of this before!?!

that is the tackiest most selfish thing i've ever heard of!!!!!!!!!

seriously ppl -- if you can't afford to have a wedding DON'T FUUCKING HAVE ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

that shiiit pissses me off so bad. its like they think its okay to say 'we can't afford it--so why don't you sponsor us!'

they probably live in their parent's basement , refuse to pay rent, and blow their $$ on stupid crap instead of saving.

ewwwww how tacky.

Do the guests then get sponsor tags on the items they paid for ?
- instead of a cake topper, a sign stating 'sponsored by Mr & Mrs. Who
- each CP has a note at the base : donated by Mr & Mrs What
- instead of checking under the plate for the penny that lets you know you get to take the CP home, the note would say ' this dinner paid for by Mr & Mrs Where'

Obviously this couple can't afford a reception.

again, how TACKY

OMG, could you imagine! ..'oh I should go thank Aunt Sally for this lovely dinner she sponsored for me!'...

It's crazy!! Big weddings are not mandatory! FH and I don't want to go into debt for a wedding, so we set a budget and worked within that

people are so strange

If you think about it, that's what the guests do... (by giving money) haha

but I think it is VERY tacky to actually come out and SAY IT...

Sponsored weddings were a trend a few years ago (Starr Jones was like the poster child for it).

Usually people ask companies to sponsor them though and not friends and relatives. At least with companies, they can gain some kind of advertising opportunities. That's all so tacky!

I could see having companies sponsor weddings - I work in PR so it makes total sense to me...

BUT asking your guests to sponsor weddings...that is heinous and tacky and just unreal....

My FH is Mexican and that's what they do for all their big events, weddings, baptisms, etc. The people who sponsor are 'padrinos' which means like Godparents.

I think that's different though--we have something actually called 'sponsors' which is like Godparents. They are supposed to be there to witness your marriage and also help in the wedding.

It seems like this couple, in lieu of presents, is just asking guests to do that.

Well yeah, I wouldn't put it on my invitation, that's tacky.

But I know some of his friends asked what they could pay for for the wedding and I explained to them that we weren't doing that.

If your family and close friends want to do that, that's great, but to ask others to go in on it is crazy.
