OMG I CAN NOT BELIEVE I AM POSTING THIS! MY WEDDING REVIEW AND PICS!!! UM, 23 pages long!

Original post by bethsiar

LIW. I have a love/hate relationship with LIW. There are times I used to get so frustrated I wouldn’t post for a while, I couldn’t stand the drama. Then one time a psycho bride posted about me, a whole thread dedicated to just me and my florist and I got so many FMs, and made so many friends because of that, I was addicted ever since. To that psycho bride, I have to give my sincerest thanks. I made friends with Eroxgirl because of it, who just went to my wedding and a quite few others like Jenndale ;). Point being, sometimes there will be a few people you roll your eyes at, or maybe even make fun of, (myself included, I’m sure) and yes I did turn into one of those girls who makes friends on this website and they go to each others weddings, but there are truly amazing people on here. If I could, I would have invited a lot more. Anyone who doesn’t use the website to its complete capacity is truly missing out. I can only hope I can begin to help each and every bride as they have helped me.

The days leading up to my wedding, actually the weekend, I would never take back or re-do. When I get nervous, my stomach will hurt, but this was like I had food poisoning. Every time I tried to bite into something or drink anything, my stomach would surge and I would secretly spit it out. It was horrible. I tried to explain it to my husband, but he of course took it personally thinking it had to do with getting married, but really I have no idea why I was so anxious, nervous, whatever it was. I wasn’t scared of rain, it was gorgeous out, I had faith in all my vendors, and I wasn’t really having wedding nightmares, I don’t know what it was. The only thing I was thinking is that there would be a terrorist attack or a car accident that was the only nervous dreams I had. I think because when a wedding has problems it always makes top news, and I didn’t want to be one of those articles. I could picture it all in my head, the NY Times wedding announcement, pics of us at our rehearsal, our engagement photos, and then something tragic. I guess it just comes along with being a bride, but I wouldn’t want to experience that ever again.

East End Cigar- 246 Larkfield Road East Northport, NY 11731 631-754-6639. Groomsmen and Reader gifts- Turns out the owner works at my husband’s precinct. These were our Groomsmen gifts and they were SUCH a hit! Everyone loved the hand rolled cigars and thought it was such a great idea. I’m not about knickknacks especially now that we live in our little apartment so we wanted to give out something good, manly, but useful. My husband of course didn’t’ give the owner any direction so he took it all upon himself to create these little gift boxes, complete with cutter. Not only did he create the gift boxes, but he made us little bands! Absolutely wonderful on every end. Price, service and thoughtfulness. He even has a handroller, but we didn't have time in the reception to add one. He had the best prices I could find for everything on Long Island.

American Girl Place- $90.00+- This store is the most chaotic place I have ever been. Not in a bad way, just a million little girls screaming they wanted every doll in the store. It’s their only flagship store, on 5th Ave, except for one in Chicago. I took the little doll dress I had bought at Stratsburg and put it on the Kit doll. It fit perfectly and looked awesome! So many guests commented on ‘the custom dress’ and the Kit doll and how cute they were together.

AND THEN I saw the mantles! OMG the flowers were OUTSTANDING. They completely did more than I ever expected or even imagined. If it wasn’t for John, I would have such a passion for flowers, his attitude towards weddings, creativity and willingness to work with you really just makes planning that much more fun.

I took these pictures the next morning:
My Mom's flowers and my sister holding her toss bo-k in the background:

Mom's bo-k, toss bo-k and 2 bridesmaids bo-ks:

Some of the flowers that were on the mantle:

At the next day party, these were in the front hall at Oheka:

Chocolate Fountain $500. Upgrade Another must have. The chocolate fountain was such a hit it was ridiculous. There was a huge line all the way out the door to the other rooms. Waitresses would go up to the people and tell them that they didn’t have to wait on line, and could move around the room freely to sample all the desert café tables, but people were saying “Nope! We want the chocolate!” They just thought it was so great. We got a million compliments, people had read about it in Newsday…. Truly something that everyone didn’t stop talking about.

Ronnie- here she is buttoning me up.

This woman was working so hard for me. I almost felt bad for her a few times. I think she needed more help. I had so many details for her to take care of; I was a lot of work. And she did everything so well. She carried my glass of champagne all around to the pictures so I could have a drink;

here I am relaxing with the glass in between pictures.
If you are getting married at Oheka, definitely ask for Ronnie, she is so amazing. My mom said she was going to do these really pretty and outrageous napkins with my menu but there was just not enough time. Definitely ask for her.

OHEKA Castle- First I will list my Must Haves and then go into my review
1. Cigar Hour
2. Caviar and flavored vodkas (an upgrade, but every single person has commented on the flavored vodkas)
3. Someone told me the antipasti station looked like it could feed 3 weddings.
4. Desert Café
5. The chocolate fountain- see my review above! Worth the upgrade!!!!
6. Gold centerpiece stands, unless you’re going to change the tablecloths. I overheard the Memorial Day bride flipping over how her silver candelabras didn’t’ match the room, and I looked in- they totally didn’t’. The champagne tablecloths really need gold stands.
7. The suite the night before!!!! I will go into detail now.....

My detailed review of OHEKA
We had our rehearsal on Saturday at OHEKA around 11 am. Then we went to the Gatsby for our rehearsal luncheon, and then back to my house to collect all the girls and our stuff. My MOH paid for a limo to pick us up and we went to the castle. Since there was a wedding going on, at check in we had to go through the basement into the elevator and then into our suite. Which is a nice feature for the bride b/c I wouldn’t want random people being able to walk into our wedding. So we spent the night hanging out, eating pizza and talking. It was great! We looked at all our shoes, hung out on the terrace and looked into the sky, it was just amazing. I am so glad I had this sleepover party. It really helped me get through the night before, exhausted me so I could sleep, but the best part was I felt loved and surrounded by those who really love me and care for me. I have this great memory of us comparing all the different shoes that were supposedly dyed to match the dress even though they all looked completely different and we stuck them all on the mantle and laughed at them and took pictures.
The next morning would not have been possible if I did not have the suite the night before. At 8 am, Denise, the makeup artist showed up and shortly after, John the hairdresser came. We started right away. I asked Oheka to bring up my breakfast; the girls had already gotten it in their suite. No luck. It came about an hour later or maybe even longer than when I asked for it. Then I called down 3 times for a bar stool to do the makeup in. That never showed. Finally, when it was my turn to do the makeup I was waiting for lunch to come, that never happened either. It didn’t come until right before the photographer was there. Then, even more annoying, the bridal suite wasn’t ready yet! I was supposed to be getting ready and taking pictures and after 1, they STILL didn’t have the suite ready. Urgh! Imagine I had not rented the suite the night before? Where would we all have had our makeup done and hair done? In just a random suite in Oheka I guess. Which wouldn’t be bad, but it is annoying.

Re: OMG I CAN NOT BELIEVE I AM POSTING THIS! MY WEDDING REVIEW AND PICS!!! UM, 23 pages long!

Ok so all morning while I was getting ready, that was my only complaint. Here was my view while they were doing my hair

I remember just deep breathing and everyone talking around me the suite was filled with people. I stared out the window at the gardens, in my Oheka robe and just took deep breaths. I couldn’t stop smiling I was so excited. Then my Mom handed me the New York Times Wedding announcement and I was so happy! I read that and I was all excited to see it. Ronnie brought me tea and I relaxed. Probably the only time I relaxed all day because I could only see the gardens in front of me and not the chaos behind my back. After my hair, John put my veil in and attached the cathedral part to the back of my robe using a coat hanger which I thought was a really good idea. I sat down and had my makeup done, then lunch came, it was grilled chicken ceasar salad, but I couldn’t eat a bite. I was so sick to my stomach, every morsel made me nauseous. Just then, the Best Man comes in with a card from Evan, which immediately sets me off crying. The first time the whole day. My best friend Jenny, and my sister in law, Christine, come outside on the terrace where I was crying and they made me feel sooooo much better. Finally I can eat. Nope, here are the photographers. I go into the bedroom of the suite and try to put on my corset. That requires my new sister in law, my MOH, and 2 bridesmaids. LOL. In hindsight, maybe I should have let the photographers in; the pictures would have been very amusing.
We had to wait a few minutes, but finally the bridal suite was done and I was off to get ready. Oheka moved all my stuff in there for me, carried in my gown and everything.

Re: OMG I CAN NOT BELIEVE I AM POSTING THIS! MY WEDDING REVIEW AND PICS!!! UM, 23 pages long!

My mom and my sister and my MOH helped me get ready because the room is just a little too small.

My Dad wanted to come in and I yelled at him that I was getting changed; meanwhile I had 5 male photographers taking my picture LOL. From there on, the service at Oheka was absolutely amazing.
Ronnie would follow me around and carry my very heavy bouquet, Cathy would have my drink. It was sooo nice. They were very concerned with stuffing Evan in a room with no windows so that he couldn’t see me during any of my pics. Which he complained was really hot b/c they didn’t turn on the AC before they all went in there. Then Evan forgot his cards and he wanted to go get them, but he got caught trying to escape and Oscar made him go back into the room. So funny. The guys had a great time. They said Oscar, the butler, was getting them anything they wanted and they were playing at the poker table and playing pool.

Here is my last complaint about Oheka. When I was done taking my pictures and they sent me to the suite, and took Evan’s pictures. It was so fun watching them set up for the ceremony and I was waving to Oscar from the window which was making him nervous because Evan was taking his pictures right near there and he didn’t want Evan to see my head peeking out. I really was loving watching the arch being made and the runner being put out. It was so exciting. But I did notice that it wasn’t until 5:15 that they let the people out to the ceremony area. I don’t know if it was Oheka’s fault or not, but the ceremony started late which made me lose photographer time etc.

At the end of the ceremony, we walked back up and Cathy and Ronnie opened the doors into the sitting room and gave us each a kiss on the cheek, a heartfelt Congratulations and handed us both a glass of champagne. It was sooo cute. Then the whole processional was ushered into the sitting room, parents and grandparents, the doors shut and we waited for the people to head over to cocktail hour.

Re: OMG I CAN NOT BELIEVE I AM POSTING THIS! MY WEDDING REVIEW AND PICS!!! UM, 23 pages long!

Once the crowds cleared we went outside and took our bridal party pictures. The Oheka people came out with a huge tray of champagne for all the bridal party members. They left and then it was just me and Evan. We began taking our pictures and Ronnie and Cathy followed us around with my bo-k and 2 glasses of champagne. Watched every photo and really helped us out. We missed the whole cocktail hour, but we didn’t care. We just wanted to be together and liked taking our pictures, basking in our newlywed love.

Ronnie and Cathy made us up two plates of the cocktail items for us to eat in the sitting room and the library. We quickly tried a little bit then went to cocktail to say hello, but only made about 2 feet before we were just surrounded and that didn’t work. Before we knew it, it was time to have the whole bridal party meet in the library and line up for the entrance. We did and walked in order the hallway in front of the ballroom. I heard Zombination come on (my husband’s choice) and we all walked in.

And then did our first dance:

Re: OMG I CAN NOT BELIEVE I AM POSTING THIS! MY WEDDING REVIEW AND PICS!!! UM, 23 pages long!

That is pretty much where the night went on high speed and every moment merged into the next. Every time I sat down, I was being asked to do something else and if we had a moment, someone was always bothering us to talk to us.

We only greeted half our tables, I remember the exact couple we left off on because I went back to them, sat down to say hi and right away Cathy said “ok, it’s time for the bouquet toss!”
Having dessert café in another room slowed down the night too. I was able to sit down, try some wedding cake with my new husband and talk to the bridesmaids and laugh at the line for the chocolate fountain. We went back into the ballroom to dance before the night was over. That hour flew by too because the next part I remember is handing out the flowers from our centerpiece stands, doing a shot with my bridesmaids and then going to cigar hour. I remember the entire jazz and cordial hour- so that was my favorite part. However, a lot of older people left during it because they didn’t like all the smoke. It gets really smoky during that part, but it’s awesome because you get to talk to all the people you missed at the wedding.

Everyone always says not to sweat the small stuff. Here is what I would have changed. I relinquished jobs to others. I hated how my ring for a kiss bells looked my drink menus were never put out and I had to ask someone to put my card box out. However, these are my biggest problems? That’s nothing!
Cake Topper: http://www.martineschocolates.com another daily candy helpful hint. $12. Cake topper, white chocolate, husband’s favorite, and a cute, dainty addition to the cake.

After Party:
A to Z Rentals- 516-293-4192 $25. Delivery fee, $1.35 to $3.50 a chair, 36” table, $7. A piece we used them for our after party and it was a little rainy on Memorial Day, but good service I would say.

Muller’s Meats- Always good food at a great price. I don’t know how much because my parents booked them.

Susie at Liberty Travel- [email protected]. I worked with Susie entirely via email. She was sooo sweet and worked so quickly to find the best deals, comparing the cost of staying in the US vs. going to Punta Cana. She followed up with us to make sure we were ready for our trip and truly went above and beyond the average travel agent. When we got to the resort, we were very pleased to find out we had one of the nicest rooms in the entire place! Thanks to Susie, not only did we get a Swim out suite, but the corner one that faced the pool and the ocean! When I got back from the honeymoon, she checked up to make sure we were happy with our room. I couldn’t thank her enough!!!

I have to do the color pictures of the cake and everything, but for now I hope you enjoyed my pics and review!

Here are the pictures of our cake top that I took the next day: I love sugar flowers!
