i would say send a simple thank you note for early gifts, and then also send them your 'official' thank you card later

i think i read somewhere that you can send now for early gifts you received.

Its funny because many times you'll get such generous gifts from ppl you dont know that well lol. But if he does business with your dad then thats why he did so, good for you will come in handy. Sometimes it can be shocking, for my shower somebody gave us a $1,000 check i couldn't even believe it. It was a close family member of fh's but still i was like OMG for the shower
