One If By Land, Two If By Sea...

One If By Land, Two If By Sea...

...restaurant in Greenwich Village. My stepmom and dad want to host an 'engagement dinner' there for FH & I - about 20 guests in all.

Has anyone ever been?

never been, but want to. It was rated one of the most romantic restaurants in the city - it's also really pricey from what I hear....but the food is supposedly great

It's incredible!!! SO romantic. I think it was even voted the most romantic restaurant in Manhattan once. The food is great....I say go for it..happily!

I've been twice. It is a good restaurant. The first time I thought it was overrated but the second time I liked it better. (Maybe the first time was because it was a first date with a strange guy (not DH) and I felt so weird that he brought me to such a restaurant on a first date! The second time was with DH for a dating anniversary - he didn't know I had been there before and we had great service and a much better time!)

Sounds great!

Niecey... I was with you...I thought it was over rated also.

The place itself is great...the food..AWESOME! I just thought it was overated in the sense of how long a wait for reservations, blah, blah, blah...but everyone else that has ever been there LOVES IT!!

I think it would be GREAT for a e-party.

ALSO!

Make sure people know where it is if they are not familiar with that area...there is no sign and it took me a few times passing it to find it!!! LOL!!

Thanks girls!

My stepmom and dad go there for their anniversary - they love it, thus them pushing for it. I was just concerned that it was too much $$$ and might not be able to handle a larger party. She also suggested Tavern on the Green.

To be quite honest - without sounding ungrateful or selfish - FH & I rather NOT have a party (actually, if they're willing to spend the $$$, we would much prefer the $$$ than the party, as I'm sure anyone who is paying for a wedding on their own knows what I mean!) We've tried from every angle to get them to NOT have a party for us but they're so persistant that we finally relented - thinking it was going to be a dinner at their house. Then yesterday she throws these 2 places at us. She's a sneaky one I tell ya.

The ambiance and the food are worth the price tag.

I've been there several times and I think it's sooooooooooo overrated...

I am still waiting for hubby to take me there. I know 2 women that got engaged there and they really loved it, I don't know if its the diamond that made it better or it really was the food, but Roger is really not as excited as I, don't know why, I have heard all good things about the place.

DH took me one year for my birthday. Very nice, good food, excellent service, but wayyyyy overrated if you read the reviews! They hype the place soo much, you expect to dine in paradise, I guess. But, I think that an e-party would definitely be elegant and special, don't get me wrong the place is really nice and elegant, but it's made out to be 'the MOST romantic restaurant in the city' which it is not quite. If you have your party there it will certainly impress your guests! Just my opinion!

janatlantica, you couldn't have put it any better!!!

I want to also add that for an e-party it'll be fav, but as the most romantic, def 2 thumbs down in my opinion.. I can list soo many others that are soo better than this place.

Interesting, thanks for the input everyone!

I read one review last night that stated that the place has 10 proposals a night and 30 on V-day. Seems outrageous to me.

I am so suprised by the reviews.....
I guess I am a mush or something, but when I have gone there with FH, I have always had the most romantic nights....
Maybe it's the company :) and the fact that we always follow up dinner with a nice long walk around the village and then go for a glass of wine....Maybe it's not all about OIBL, TIBS....but the night itself......

Re: One If By Land, Two If By Sea...

DH took me there on our first date.
He drove around for 20 minutes trying to find the place and we were going to miss our reservaation. So he parked we hailed a cab and the restaurant was 2 blocks away!!
It's a very odd locale. But I enjoyed it, but I'm not dying to go back cause the food was sooooooo wonderful or the ambiance was to die for. It was alright. I would consider other options, it's alot of money for just okay!!

Marcella/Jan

Did you even find it to be romantic?? I didn't.

I thought it was VERY noisey.

cat, It totally wasn't what I expected it to be.. then after going back 2,3,4,5,6th time!, I still wasn't impressed.. and it was very pricey.. and the food was not plentiful..

There are soo many restaurants that were sooo much better in my book.. Romantic to me, it a tucked away place, where you feel as though it's only you and your sig other in the whole place.. i dunno, maybe it's just me..
