online courses????

I work for a dental partnership in the home office. I found a dental assistant program I can do online for a good price, and since I'm in the field already, I know it won't be a problem to get a dental assistant job within the company, I just don't know if an online course is a good idea. Has anybody done something like this? Any advice?

I have, but you have to make sure the school is accredited (you want to look for regional accreditation). Sometimes they are too much of a good thing. It is definitely more work than an in class course, but I took several of my Master's courses this way since it worked better with my work schedule.

I finished my last two years (in one year) online at NYIT and it was GREAT. Lots of work but so worth not going to the campus.

SUNY has several online programs all with SUNY tuition. link The University of Phoenix is also a popular accredited one, but it is more expensive I believe.

I think quite a few offer online courses. What I liked about NYIT is that you can take ALL of your classes online, not just some. Also, you order your books on the online campus website and when you are done with the semester, they give you a prepaid UPS label and you can mail them back and sell them back to them. You can also take summer courses as well, to finish faster. They are very flexible.

FH's cousin did University of Phoenix and didn't like the set up at all. He felt it was very disorganized and he had a lot of group projects which he didn't like either. NYIT is the same price as it would be if you were to go to the campus.

Yeah, the SUNY ones are probably the cheapest options.

It's not in my book of accredited colleges (I work in a college) so it is probably just a money-making business where your degree and credits won't be recognized by any other employer or university.

OMG, it says right here they are accredited by the accrediting Comission of the Distance Education and Training Council and the Pennsylvania State Board of Private Licensed Schools. It sounds like is something like boces maybe?

A lot of these places just make up those associations they claim to be accredited by. Board of Private Licensed Schools means they don't answer to any higher authority (all accredited schools need to adhere to certain standards in terms of teaching, amount of time required for the course to award credits, etc.). The degree won't be worth the paper it is printed on. It's so sad that there are so many places like that out there just to take people's money.
