1) if you have the days/time off TAKE IT! 2) try not to take time off--makes you look bad.

Re: opinion...
I use a sick day every 8-10 weeks, mainly for my mental health or if I need to go to the doctor or something.
I haven't been taking too many vacation days to save for the HM....
I don't think it's ok to get too crazy with your days off and use them all the time, but they are your days to use as you see fit IMO.

Re: opinion...
Can't say don't know the situation. My personally since I can bank my days I save them as much as possible so that when I have a family I have more than I will need.

Re: opinion...
At my job they encourage us to take ALL our time.
What I do is to try and stagger my time.
A week here, few days there etc etc.

Re: opinion...
My family always instilled in my the idea that taking the days off makes you look bad, but we are all teachers, and I think that it's a different situation when you are a teacher. It all depends on tenure and blahbutty blah blah

if you lose them at the end of the year, then I would say yes.

Re: opinion...
I think it also depends on whether or not you can carry days over for a while. I know a lot of places make you use it all before the end of the year or it's gone.
At my job they make you use it if you've got a certain number of days accumulated (not a problem for me)....

I don't think you can look bad taking time you EARN.
I try not to take days during my peak busy seasons at work and almost never call in on a Monday, but other then that I take the time I need.

Re: opinion...
As far as vacation and personal, I try to take what I am alloted to in the timeframe the company allows and that is encouraged but this is always dependent on my projects of the year. There are many years where I did not use all my vacation time because I was involved in major implementations of systems.
As far as sick, I only take them when I am sick. I think employees who say I get paid 10 sick days so therefore I will take all 10 sick days will never get ahead with that attitude. If someone in my dept calls in sick and I know they realy aren't - I do look down upon them (like calling in sick today..)...I just can't help that...is how I feel and my get ahead attitude.

Are you feeling sick? Or do you just feel awful because you're at work?

Seriously - if you are sick - you should stay home and get better. If you are that sick that your boss knows - stay home. As a manager I feel bad when someone on my staff is so sick and still trying to drag themselves to work. I rather them stay home - take care of themselves and come back refreshed....

i appreciate that.
my manager takes advantage of her position. she's already been out three days this year. (not including the holiday) everyone looks down on her...

Re: opinion...
I know how you feel. I really felt bad if I did take a sick day because I was sticking my fellow co-worker who I just adore. But..... I had over 260 hours of sick time and them my company went out of business. I lost them ALL. So, I tell anyone who does have sick time, don't feel guilty.
I had co workers who would call in and use their time and I would get so mad because nothing was ever said. but now I think how smart they were.

Niecey, I have to say that I agree with you for the most part, in that taking sick days does not reflect well on those who take them in excess.
I don't go out of my way to use all of my sick days. I just take a day when I need to here and there. Also, I try my best to make up for the time I miss during lunch hours, before and after work, etc.

If you're actually sick then you should not feel the slightest bit guilty for staying home tomorrow! In this cold you'll end up sicker if you push yourself!

There are those that are really sick and those that take advantage - it is pretty easy to tell apart. If you are sick take the day and do not feel guilty. I have been out sick 2 days this year (last week) but my boss knows that I don't make habit of it and she knows that when I call in sick I must be bad...and I was - had food posioning or some kind of horrible stomach flu...be careful there are a lot of flu's going around...
