It is very sad. I, too, am close to this situation. I agree though - unless the parents were being supported, there is no question whee the $ should go.
Just my opinion...

Re: Opinion about WTC widow and money
In our society a spouse is typically given insurance money, 401K assets as well as other cash and non-cash assets upon a spouses death, unless it is specificed in a Will to go to another person. While I believe that parents are VERY important to a child's life and their love is in no way less than that of another person, it is a spouse's responsiblity to care for their family upon their dealth. How do the parents know if this couple had significant debt? All of that has to be paid off before any money is spent. Also the parents need to consider that the husband's income was probably very important to his wife (aka family)'s life. Their home, car, debt etc..was, in part, supported by his income. Funerals are very expensive as well and again are paid off before any checks are written to a person. So sometimes a large policy is not so large afterall.
These parents are angry, and they have every right to be. They lost their child on that day, along with thousands of other parents. Often the only way a person can deal with anger is to have someone to be mad at...and in this case there is no one to yell at, or make pay. I mean, the average person in our country is not searching for Bin Laden or the other terriorists. A situation like this also makes people feel helpless and hopeless. So these parents have decided that this wife is the enemy and she holds the power and she has the last connection to their son. And while a wife can learn to heal and move on, I don't believe a parent can do the same. They see her life moving forward and they are left in a blackness that none of us can imagine. And they just get more and more angry. How can she forgot him? How can she love someone else? Therefore the money is all they have left. It helps them NOT forgot their son, if you know what I mean. By fighting for the money they are 'forced' to think about him and talk about him and in turn, remember him. They don't understand that they can still do that, without anger, without hate, without a fight. This fight keeps them connected to their son.
I wish these parents the hope of finding some peace. I wish this wife a happy life that is filled with love once again, because that is what her husband would have wanted.
And Ron- I am sorry for your lose. I hope your family has found some peace

I sorry about your brother in law
And I agree, if the parents had no financial support from the son, then they should not expect any money.

Will money bring those souls back?
I know someone who died eventually from the injuries sustained on 9-11.. they weren't family or anything lik that.. but what good will money do? Sure, the widows and children deserve compensation for their loss.. that's it. JMO

Re: Opinion about WTC widow and money
I think the parents shouldnt get any. The wife was left alone to cope for herself, the parents still have eachother. They did loose their child but what will $ do to change that for them? At least the wife could use it if they had a house or bills. If the parents care about if they get anything I think thats ridiculous!

Re: Opinion about WTC widow and money
I think many of you are missing the point here. You are all looking at it from a greed point of view. read my previous post. I bet these parents do not care about the actual money..it is about the fact that this is all they have left. They just want their son back and don't know how to deal with their grief. I find this sad all around.
