opinions needed re: oot/rehersal dinners

FH and i are going back and forth on this topic...
we are NOT having a rehearsal dinner (we are not rehearsing since our ceremony is at our reception location we cant get in plus its a Jewish wedding so typically there is no rehearsal).
We are having an OOT dinner the night before for my fathers family and FMILs family.
We decided NOT to include the bridal party for a few reasons (#1 is money and #2 is bc it is on long island and it would require them to take a hotel room another night since they are in the city and in northern westchester and #3 bc we want to really want to spend time with our OOT guests since we rarely see them).

Now FH is considering a bridal party dinner 2 nights before the wedding (a thurs night) in the city so they can take public transportation there and home. we would not invite them with guests - it would be our 12 BP people and that is it. I personally think it is a waste - we are getting them gifts and paying for the morning after brunch for them. FH thinks they will be insulted or feel left out if there is no dinner.
what do you ladies think??? is a dinner necessary?? i havent been part of a wedding ever so i dont know what the norm is...please help

ps - thanks for reading this novel

UPDATE: i spoke with FH last night and we worked out a budget for the dinner. we are going to do it at a family style restaurant in NYC 2 fridays before the wedding so that it doesnt interfere with anyones work schedule.
thanks for the opinions ladies!

I think it's a good idea - sorry on the side with your FH. It will make them feel special and get hyped up for the big day! You don't have to make it so formal but I think they would appreciate it.

I think it would be nice- if I were in a wedding party, I would expect a rehearsal dinner of some sort.

IMO the bridal party should always be invited to the 'rehearsal dinner'. I also think it might be asking a great deal of the bridal party to set aside another day to spend with you and FH. Why not do something more casual so that you can afford for all to be there?

we are also not having a RD.
We are considering having an immediate family only dinner a couple nights before. And thats pretty much that.
IF anyone in the BP asks me if we are having a RD, I simply say no and thats that!

So I wouldnt feel bad, enjoy the time with ur fam, that you dont see often and then party for your wedding with everyone else!!!
HTH!!

i'd expect a rehearsal dinner. it's a time for the celebration to begin and for everyone in the BP to get together, meet if they haven't already, have fun and get pumped for the wedding. they're spending a lot of time and money on your wedding, i think that special meal for them is a nice gesture.

We've been trying to figure out the same thing. For those not doing an RD, when are you giving the bridal party their gifts?
