My fil's asked us to invite 2 couples (friends of theirs) that we barely know. We said no. We mailed our invites a month ago. We already have the right amount of guests, and if we are short people, we want to add our friends, not theirs.
We just got a message that we have to add them, because they really want to come. What would you do?

Re: Opinions please
Honestly (and I am not saying you should do this) but we would probably invite them to avoid any hard feelings with the IL's (plus my FI is always trying to make eveyone happy!)

Re: Opinions please
i think i would invite them also but i'm a pushover when it comes to that stuff. i swore we would cap our invite list at 175 and it's at like 220 now....

Re: Opinions please
Me- I have the opposite...I have been telling ILs to invite a couple of friends and they keep saying no- too many people.
For your case: Tell them you will put their friends on the C list- if you have room and add your friends and still have room you will invite their friends.
Hope that helps!

Re: Opinions please
I think would invite them as well, for the same reason that Kelly9904 stated, I wouldn't want any hard feelings; however what Dino1109 suggested about the C list sounds like a fair way of dealing with it.
Good Luck with your decision.

Re: Opinions please
Who is paying for the wedding? It makes a difference, in my opinion. If you're paying for it, tell them nicely but firmly, NO. If they're paying for it, well, let them pay for their friends. You won't really notice the other 4 people. Or, you can tell them that for every extra person they invite, you are inviting the same number of your friends, but again, only if they're paying, and again, in a nice but firm manner.

Re: Opinions please
I have to add- (now that fh is not standing behind me rading this) my fil's told these people they were invited without asking us.
They are not giving us anything- (they gave us maybe $200 toward the wedding).
They told us they were going to pay for our rehearsal dinner, and then offered us $300 towards it. (we are not having one).
My parents are paying for 97% of the wedding, we are paying for the rest and are on a tight budget. I do not want to add an extra $500 for people we don;t even know.

Re: Opinions please
You or your FH (should really be his responsibility) need to find a way to tell them that they are going to have to fork over the $500 for these guests that they invited without the benefit of an invitation. I don't know a delicate way about going about that, but you need to somehow tell them that unless they can come up with the cash for these people, there will be 4 people standing around the entire time without meals to eat.

Re: Opinions please
I would invite them also.
We let both parents invite some close friends to the wedding. My IL's contributed only heartache to the wedding but we felt that if theses few guests were important to them that we should invite them.

Re: Opinions please
I would invite them - and let peace prevail with your FIL's
since my parents footed a big part of the bill...I wasn't upset that there were lots of my moms friends there (I knew them...but not well)
but if they weren't paying I would be ok with it...as long as they paid the extra charge...

Re: Opinions please
Im footing my bill... so therefore my answer is no.
I am giving my parents and his parents ample oppurtunity to give me a good idea of who they want to invite. If I was short on openings and it was people I know vs strangers.. I'd pick those I'd know. I'd break it gently but firmly.
Unfortunately.. im total reverse.. i have 100 seats and about 30 people I know will attend.

Re: Opinions please
I feel the same way....my parents want to invite my fathers office staff and my FH and I dont know them all to well, and we rather invite more of our friends then my parents friends.....its very stressful! I would talk to your FIL and let them know how u feel, and tell them what there doing isnt fair to u and your FH.
