My Dh and I are invited on 1/16/05 to my bosses wedding. Well, about 3 days ago I was handed a list of 10 songs and told that these were the songs we are going to sing at the reception. I was not asked or told prior about this and now my DH and I have a very limited amount of time to learn these songs. I don't mind singing at friends weddings, but normally it is 1-2 songs not 10 songs. DH feels like we are being taken advantage of a little and I agree. I feel like instead of being a guest at the wedding we are going to be working it. Are we being unreasonable? What would you think? Part of me wants to just pick 3 songs and say that that is all we have time to learn.

Re: Opinons please!!
if you are a guest at someone's wedding why do you have to pick ten songs out and learn to sing them? I would say we are not in the wedding party so why do we have to do this what is the meaning for this? I would just pick out two and say thats all i had enough time to learn. man i think thats wrong. you both are right you might be being taken advantage of. you are not be unreasonable.

Re: Opinons please!!
Your boss just hired you as free entertainment!!
He gets a gift, 10 songs performed and only has to shell out money to cover the cost of your plates (probably about 150 per person?) that's appalling!

I'd be very annoyed. 10 songs is a LOT! That's at least 20-30 minutes. I would tell them you wish they had asked you earlier, because you don't have time to learn all 10 with such short notice.

wow! he didn't ask? just assumed? He's not the boss of your social life too!
I would tell him you can only learn 3 in that amount of time. Tell him you didn't know he wanted you to sing, so you aren't prepared.
And if you did sing the 10 songs, I wouldn't give a gift--that's your gift right there.

Definitely! I certainly would not want to give a gift on top of singing at the reception - that is a HUGE gift to hear you perform!
Heidi, it totally sounds like you and your DH are being taken advatage of. I know its a bit of a sticky situation, since this is your boss - But I dare say that 10 songs is practically 1/3 of the wedding reception alone!
Has he hired music (band, DJ) for the reception also? He might as well had not invited you as a guest, rather just hire you and pay YOU to sing 10 songs!! somehow you are losing money on all counts in this arrangement

Re: Opinons please!!
No way can you genuinely enjoy the wedding as a guest if you have to sing TEN songs. Tell him you're flattered that he wants you to sing, but that you don't want to 'steal the show' and will keep it to 2 or 3 songs. If he protests, just let him know that's really all you'll have time to learn. With the right tone of voice, you can really get your message across. Good luck and assert yourself!!!

That is so rude!!! As the other ladies have already said, I would tell him that you only have time to learn 3 of the songs before the wedding. Tell him that you wouldn't want to try to learn them all so quickly and have them be mediocre, but would rather do 3 songs really well. It really sounds like he's taking advantage of you!

I agree except you sing ONE song and your gift is right there! Guests do NOT work at a wedding.
