I am on the Orthro Evra Patch and have been for almost 4 yrs....I KNOW I KNOW it has had so much negative feedback-- even my mom's gyno said that to me when i went in for the HPV shot.
But here is my problem:
in May i go for my annual checkup but i go to Planned Parenthood cause when i was younger 17yrs old i went on it without my parents knowing and have been getting it for free ever since...plus until the end of June i am still under my parents health insurance since i am a full time student. And my mom is old fashion and until the end of June and I get my own health insurance i want to continue getting it for free from Planned Parenthood and not the gyno i go to (especially since she knows my mom well lol) I will switch gynos once i get my own health insurance this summer
so this may when i go to planned parenthood i dont know if i should switch to a different birth control or keep the patch??? The thing is FH leaves at the end of June for Japan for a year so i was thinking of just ending birth control until he came back (so go a yr without BC) and just get 3months worth of the patch so i have it while FH is home for the month of June. But i still kinda wanna keep my 3 day period going on haha so i was thinking of switching Birth Control
but if i go to the Nuva Ring or Loestrin 24 will my body have to get used to it and is from the beginning of May till the end of May a long enough time to get used to it? FH comes home May 29th and I dont want to have the risk of a cause i didnt allow enough time for my body to get used to the BC...
sorry soo long...TIA
ETA: to add some info

Re: Options for Birth Control
I stopped using the patch, there are a lot of risks and a lot of young girls were dying out of nowhere so I got scared and stopped.

Re: Options for Birth Control
hmm i am on Loestrin and i like it - once you start the SECOND pack you can stop using a backup method of BC so give yourself at least a month!
wait i read your post wrong - if you are going from one BC to another - i dont think there is any time in between that you are likely to get pregnant . . .of course i could totally be wrong i am not a GYN but i know if you go from NO BC to BC - they tell you to wait for the second pack. . . you probably dont even need to wait that long!
ETA: wish i had gone to planned parenthood - i decided to go to teh GYN when i was under my parents' insurance. and i didnt know my dad was getting all these bills every time i went - and when i went to my GYN it was under Jamaica hospital. . .so one time he got a bill for $300 from Jamaica hospital. . . and thought i had an abortion and freaked out on me!! so i had to explain that it was something else!!
meanwhile, if they knew i was on BC - i dont think they would ever talk to me again - (yes i am 24 ) oh well LOL

yes my parents are the same way thats why i went to planned parenthood and even now at 21 my mom would have something to say and get mad at me that i am on birth control (silly irish catholics haha) and thats why i am going to switch to a different gyno when i get my own insurance so i dont have to worry...but if i get prescriptions from the gyno my mom goes to and get them filled at teh drugstore with my health insurance card (under my parents insurance) will my dad or mom know that?? cause i would just pay the co-pay for it so would my parent even find out cause i might just do that then until the end of june when i finally get off it???? thanks again

i dont think they can tell with prescriptions
but when i went to the doc my dad would get a statement ( not a bill really bc i would just pay the copay when i went) that said something like Screening test - $200 and what was covered Exam $100 etc.
there is no 'proof' of it BUT i would never go to the same pharmacy as my parents bc once i went and told them my last name and they gave me all my grandmother's meds! imagine if it was the other way around

not that i know of - it has never happened to me unless my parents didnt tell me ( which is NOT likely at all) PLUS now since i am under my OWN insurance. . .those statements come to ME when i go to the GYN but i have YET to get anything bc of my prescriptions.

Re: Options for Birth Control
The only thing I would add is that I had a poor experience with the Nuva Ring.... it would fall out all the time when we were having sex. Plus, I would always freak myself out that it just fell out during the day -- it never did, but I didn't like the worry.
Hope this helps!

Re: Options for Birth Control
i use the nuva ring. its not bad. I dont have to worry about taking a pill everyday, (since i always forgot) my pd lasts only 4 days but i will admit that for me, it's kinda brutal. the cramping has been bad since i started. But it's worth it to me! and it's so easy to use. Just my opinion. and if you change now, or the begininning or may, you should be fine. but def. ask your docs opinion.

Re: Options for Birth Control
first: I love Loestrin 24.
second: you should give your body a few months to adjust to a new BC pill.
third: this is for any of the other girls who said their parents would kill them or whatever if they found out you were on BC - your parents arent stupid they probably know already - be an adult and if they ask you dont lie to them, you are all adults!

thank you...i am not def yet as to whether or not i am going to go off birth control while Fh is in Japan for the year or not....
and i know my mom knows i have sex and whatever but i know she would prob be hurt if she found out or disrespect me in a way because she is all about the Catholic Religion and not living together before marriage no sex before marriage blah blah blah and also i am off her insurance this june so i dont see a need to tell her cause it is my own privacy...so i feel there is no need to tell her even when i am maried if i want to continue to stay on it cause its my own decision not hers
-sorry not trying to sound snotty

my parents are italian catholics - if they knew i was having sex they wouldnt let FH in my house - yes i am an adult but premarital sex is against my religion and frowned upon in my culture. That is why i choose to keep my private life private from my parents.
Even after I am married I don't see the need to talk about my sex life with my parents.
But thanks for the unsolicited advice.
you know what - that was my fault i shouldn't be so open on a public site. I learned my lesson - thank you.

I understand where you are coming from with strict italian parents :)
My parent used to be like that,... i couldnt even have John in my room until the day I moved out. Now that we dont live together its not really a problem since what are they going to do :)
My mom trys to be my like BFFFFFF now and talk to me about all that stuff...its almost worse heheh

Re: Options for Birth Control
catie I already told you about the ring...but its awesome.. With the pill I was ALWAYS forgetting it. this is so easy, you leave it in for 3 weeks and take it out the week of your period. Ive never had a problem with it falling out, and john said he has never felt it during sex!
Now Im almost positive but check with your doctor that if you stay on birthcontrol and just switch BCS you should be ok and dont need to use a backup method. Its only if you stop taking it..then start again

Re: Options for Birth Control
If you do switch birth control methods, even between different pills, I would advise you to use an extra form of protection for the first month on that new birth control. So yeah you probably would need to use a condom from the begining till the end of may if that's how your cycle fell.
In my opinion, there are actually cardiovascular risks with all forms of birth control that utilize hormones, and the FDA would've removed the patch from the market if it really was that dangerous. If you smoke, have high blood pressure or any cardiac disease then you shouldn't be takeing a lot of the hormone birth controls since that increases your risk of serious side effects. I think since you are doing fine on the patch already you should just stick with that for the next month if that's all you plan on using it for. If you are concerned though then talk to your doctor at planned parenthood and they can switch you! I'm sure you will be fine though!

matilde I know your parents and you know mine and they are basically one in the same. I'm with you on this one.
There are just certain things that are just too taboo to admit to the parents.

I'm totally in the same boat as you. My friends don't seem to understand that my parents cannot know that I have sex but my mom especially would be devestated and it would destroy our relationship because I've been lying to her. It's one of those topics that there's just no middle ground with her.
As for the BC, if you switch types of BC you don't need a backup method. You also don't need a backup if you start your BC on the first day of your period even if you weren't previously on anything, at least that's what the pamphlet for Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo says. I've been on and off the pill for the last 2 years and whenever I go back on I start on the first day of my period so that I don't have to wait and I haven't had any problems.
