I like oranges, I really do, but I don't eat them very often because they're such a pain to eat. My parents are down in Florida for a couple of months getting some R&R and they were nice enough to send me and DH a box of oranges. So I bring one of them in to work today and I'm ready to eat it, but I forgot to bring a knife. So I try to peel it with my hands. No good. Then I get a plastic knife from the kitchenette. No good. This damn orange just doesn't want to part with its peel. I finally managed to get some of the sections free but not until after I'd totally massacred most of the orange, got sitcky juice everywhere, oh and I found out the hard way that I have a paper cut Stupid fruit.

I like the clementines--they are soo much easier to peel. Regular oranges are like soup--more trouble than they are worth.

See, these things were similar to clementines - they're called honeybells, but I'm telling ya I could not get the darn peel off!!! I should be glad it didn't squirt me in the eye.

That's exactly what I was going to say. The only bad thing is that clementines are so small - I eat 3 or 4 of them in a day!

I hear ya! Nothing's more attractive than walking in on someone with sticky juice dripping down their chin. Apples and bananas are much more user friendly anyway!!!!

Did you see the grapples at the store, the fruit that looks like an apple but smells and tastes like a grape? I wanted to try but it squicked me...

Re: Oranges piss me off
I try to avoid them all together....I will only eat oranges if someone else peels them for me. I hate the smell of my hands after peeling. It's just easier to drink some OJ.

And a here too. 'Grapples' is way too agressive of a word for a fruit's name! But it does sound tasty....

Re: Oranges piss me off
Here's a little review of the grapple I found online....
A few weeks ago, I was in a grocery store and found what might be the most wonderfully pointless (or perhaps pointlessly wonderful) new food product I've ever seen. The Grapple. The Grapple (apparently pronounced 'GRAPE-L') is an apple that tastes like a grape. There's some orchard in Washington state that has found a way to put apples through some sort of grapeification process to give them the great taste of concord grapes.
I tried one, and damned if it didn't taste like a grape. Like a big, crunchy grape.
According to the site linked above, the Grapple is a great way to get kids to try fruit as an alternative to sugary/high-fat snacks. Right -- because what has kept kids from eating more apples has always been the taste.
Quite frankly, I think to try to find a benefit of the Grapple in any sort of real terms does the product a disservice. Just come right out and say it -- The Grapple exists because someone figured out how to make it exist. That's all. There was no greate hue and cry from the marketplace, please gentle apple farmers -- produce apples that taste like something that's not an apple, but still a fruit! Do it for the children!
The Grapple is not going to cause kids to go rushing away from the Ho-Hos and down to the crisper.
Now, if they can make these Grapples bite-size and sell them in bunches, then they might have something. They could call them Appels (pronounced 'APE-Ls') -- the grapes that taste like an apple!
