ordering a gown mandatory?
Hi everyone- I'm new here. Actually I am new to this whole wedding thing! I am clueless. Thankfully my mother inlaw is helping me. I am from upstate and a few of my friends didn't understand why I have to "order" a gown. I didn't have an answer and now I am wondering myself. I have not begun to search for one yet. My wedding is Aug 2001. less than a year and ahalf away. On long island is it usually the deal that you have to order one or can you buy one right in a shop off the rack? Please excuse me if this is a totally dumb question! Take care, Stacy
Even though we are getting married in May, due to time constraints (and wedding guests staying at our house), we are waiting until July to go to Saratoga. Beautiful old victorians that are B&B's, great town to walk around, laid back, and the horses start in July and run through August. We both enjoy the atmosphere there. I would definitely recommend it to anyone even if it is "not in season" (prices are MUCH cheaper then, too). If anyone is interested, I'll see if I can find the web address for the Chamber of Commerce. (and there is a lot of history in the area, along with the spas, and the performing arts center)
Hope this helps, and good luck with whatever you decide.
ordering a gown mandatory?
Not a dumb question..you do have to order a wedding gown because the ones that you try on in the store are just samples. They usually carry only one per style. When you find one you want you get measurements taken and they order it in your size and its brand new. Who wants a gown thats been tried on 100 times. Give at least 6 or seven months. I ordered my gown 2 weeks after I got engaged. You want to give the store room for error and give yourself enough time for fittings and such. Most places take about 6 months for brides dresses to come in. Good Luck

Thanks Kimberly. I agree- who wants a dress others have tried on, I never really considered that! Thanks again. Stacy

Hi Stacy: I agree with the gown thing. My shop tried to put away the gown I tried on and never ordered a new one. I do, however, know lots of girls around here who did take the gown off the rack if it fit. The shop will clean it thoroughly for you and usually gives it to you half price. You don't have to order a gown. There is a place called Estelle's Dressy dresses, I believe on Route 110. They carry all brand new dresses in several sizes and you can buy them right off the rack. They are usually 200 - 400 bucks and they are brand names that we are all ordering. I am getting married in 6 weeks and still do not have the gown I ordered; it's a horrible feeling knowing you put so much money into it and you actually have more problems than it's worth. Read below what has happened to Debby. This horrible situation for her. She ordered her gown on time and it came in wrong. Is it really worth it? Don't know, but I have my doubts now being what happened to her and the pressure I feel myself not having mine until 3 weeks before my wedding. I think if I bought one off the rack, I might just have a little less stress in my life and one less thing to worry about. Think about it, shop around and if you try on a dress you love.... and it fits. Ask to have it cleaned and get it at half price. It's worth it, I feel.

ordering a gown mandatory?
Hi. You have two options either you can go to a shop and order a dress or you can go to someplace like David's Bridal or Estelles and buy right off the rack. Davids has a huge selection in a ton of sizes but is alway crowded and you dont get as much personal attention as you would in a shop. I found that my dress I ordered from a shop was not any more expensive than Davids. Davids also has alot of locations if you are not on Long Island. They have a website as well.www.davidsbridal.com. My cousin bought a beautiful dress from there. I opted not to go that way but it is a good option. Good Luck!!

Thanks for responding Concetta (beautiful name by the way). I am on Long Island, but I'm from upstate near Woodstock. I have heard a few things about Davids. They seem to have a huge selection but I heard its tough to get other places to alter dresses from Davids because they are not made well and the shops do not want to be blamed if it is ruined. Anyway- I have also heard that you can get a better quality dress in a shop for a comparitive price if you shop around. Thanks for the info. Hugs Stacy
Good Luck!

Dear kim- do you know any shops that are super reliable and will have the dress in 6 six months. Please tell me. All I hear are horror stories that make me think I have to order right now or I may be sorry. If you know a shoop with that kind of reputation i would love to know the name! Thanks Hugs Stacy
Good Luck!
