Something we were discussing on BHB made me think of asking this: How many of you check that thing on the back of your license about donating your organs??
I started checking it a few years ago, never dawned on me to check it before that for some reason... Anyone else planning on donating their organs if they die in (I guess) some sort of accident (car, boat, etc.)??
:::sorry to pick such a gloomy topic, just curious!:::

Re: Organ Donor??
anyone? it's OK if you don't-- doesn't mean you are going to hell with all of your organs still in your body LOL
I am a registered organ donor. You can't just sign the back of your Driver's licence. That dosen't necessarily make it legal. You need to go to the Organ donor site and register.
I also have a living will and advance directives.
AND....I bought my buriel plot about a year ago!
I'm all set!

Re: Organ Donor??
i'm an organ donor...and i've made my wishes known to all my family, including FH...if something happens to me and i die...i want them to take whatever they can use...eyes (yes they can take and use your eyes), heart, kidneys...the works....i figure i'm not going to need those things when i'm dead and it would be selfish of me to keep them when they can save someone else's life

Re: Organ Donor??
Don't they have to take your organs while you are still alive? Thats what I was told in college during a biology class. The professor told us to ask our doctors if they are donors because most likely they aren't. This made me afraid to become a donor but I never actually checked to see if what I was told was the truth.

I am!!!!! It is such an honor to be able to do this for someone else, and I think it is one of the greatest gifts to give. Yes, I would rather donate an organ being alive, but I know how many others would benefit and that is very important to me.

I don't check the back of my license, however both my mom and FH know that in the event of anything happening to me that they can donate everything.

I signed up when I added my motorcycle class to my license...i figure if I kill myself at least someone else should benefit, and it's not like I'm taking them with me! I made sure I told my family so they know my wishes as well.

I'm an organ donor also. When my dad died we donated his kidney, eyes. About a year after, we got a letter from a little boy who's father received my dad's kidney. Thanking us for helping his father. That was the best gift we ever received, knowing that we were able to save someone life. I also donate blood three time a year.

LMAO!!! you are too funny!! 'i'm all set' hahaha!!! that cracked me up for real!
my uncle, father and brother are all police officers. they told me (from experience unfortuntaley) that when someone is in a car accident and they die, they look at the back of their license and if it is signed they go about seeing if you are needed for donating organs-- i think there are other ways to register also... i'm just referring to the auto accident type-- basically, when a cop finds you dead lol this is a terrible subject!! haha... but i told my parents if ANYTHING else happens before i get married they are to give anything to anyone who needs it from me-- and vinny knows that once we get married, it's the same thing... i should get it in writing i guess tho. hmmm

WOW!! that's amazing-- HOW NICE!!!
My doctor told me not to donate blood unless MY family member is in need or it's a real emergency... He said it is a 'strain on your body' and not good for you to do more than a few times in your life (IE emergencies w/ family members). He also said what really annoys him was the fact that they can use blood from dead people (just like they use organs) but they choose not to b/c the public thinks it's 'morbid'-- but if you are taking a liver/kidney-- what's the difference?? He said if we took blood from people who died there would never be a shortage again-- but as long as there are people willing to give it, they don't need to look for alternate means. i was pretty shocked by that, he only told me this about 4 months ago and I still haven't made up my mind

I plan on donating organs with the exception of my eyes....I wouldn't want someone else to have them...I think it would be kinda weird... Obviously not for me... but just kinda weird in general.

It not really your whole eye, it 's just your cornea's
When my grandmother died of cancer three years ago her cornea's were about the only thing that we could donate. My mom got a letter a few months later saying that someone recieved them. It's kind of amuzing to think that someone is going to be seeing things from my grandmothers 'point of view' ! !
