Re: Orthodox Ceremony

Are you ok with the whole walking around a table, wearing a crown.....godparents business?

Also the people that you & your FH chose for godparents are they a married couple???? I assume they must be orthodox, is that so?

I'm having a Greek Orthodox Wedding. My FH is Greek. I'm excited about it. It seems very romantic.

they dont have to be married but yes your koumbara and koumbari will be orthodox. If youre not ok with all those things then i would talk to your fh about it bc these are all things that are a very big part of the ceremony and cant be taken out. Also read up on everything that will take place, i find many non-orthodox girls who agree to an orthodox ceremony are so shocked later on when they find out that there are no vows spoken, you and your FH will say nothing during the ceremony. And if you agree to it then everything has to be embraced. I am orthodox but getting married in a catholic church and will do everything that i am supposed to do at the ceremony.

Re: Orthodox Ceremony

I just meant that you have godparents instead of a BM & MOH. They stand next to you and hold candles and put the crowns on for you. I have even seen them put on the wedding rings for the couple at some weddings. The Orthodox weddings I have seen are so emotionless.....I am hoping the priest will let me change up a few things.

Oh, I didn't know that's what they are considered. But his sister is in my wedding party -not the MOH, but we were told she could stand in for that at the ceremony and his BM is going to convert (don't ask, but he wants to and I will down the road, I know it sounds crazy but we all plan to go to church together with our kids). I love the whole ceremony, it sounds very romantic. I didn't know we don't talk at all during the ceremony, but I might like that, I'm shy.

Are you going to do the Orthodox ceremony, or are you having concerns?

Oh, I just saw you put 'emotionless', how come? I didn't think it was, I've never been to one though, only read up on them and through word of mouth. What makes them emotionless?

its the best man and moh but their way of doing it. Usually in europe there is no bp just the godparents as we call them. Greeks refer to it as koumbara and koumbari, im not greek but i am orthodox and im going to assume thats the words for godparents in greek, not 100% sure though.

what do you want to change? normally you cant change things, they are pretty strict bc each thing they do at a ceremony symbolizes something of great significance.

Re: Orthodox Ceremony

Me and my FH are both Romanian Orthodox. I have been to several ceremonies and I am not fond of Romanian ceremonies. I have yet to see a bride walk down the isle. There is no music except for the fact that the priest sings everything.

I really would love to say my own vows and place the ring on his find myself and vice versa.

I actually wanted to do a nondenominational ceremony at the hall but the family is having a problem with it. So i am in the process of finding a church that will be a little lenient.

wait so youre orthodox too? if you dont like it then do a non-denominational ceremony, you can get married at the RH. I am romanian also, but getting married in a catholic church since my FH is catholic. RO is more lenient than GO so who knows but theres still alot of things that simply can't be changed.

A bride NEVER walks down the aisle in any orthodox ceremony bc if you go by the traditions and what things mean, the bride and groom enter the house of god together. Vows are never spoken because in catholic ceremony its not the priest that marries you but the couple that marries eachother and the priest is a witness, in the orthodox religion you are being married by god through his house of worship, they dont believe the couple marries eachother so bc of that you dont say anything to eachother.

Aww Your romanian too..

Well you just cleared up a whole bunch of stuff for me. The catholic church didnt make you convert right?

I am even more confused then before.
I would so much just rather do a ceremony at the RH...but I will have to convice my FH. However, his mommy wants him to marry in church so i dont know if i can convince him otherwise.

No i didnt have to convert. We had to do pre-cana but every couple getting married in the catholic church has to do it, and i actually liked it.

Well definitely talk to him. If not dont worry, you can still have a great ceremony. Some can be boring but i think it has alot to do with the priest. Maybe go around to different churches

Re: Orthodox Ceremony

I just called my GO church cause I got nervous that I wouldn't be able to walk down the isle with my Dad. And they reassured me that I will be walking down the isle with my dad. So I guess it depends on the church. But I'm glad I called, that is a good question to ask, and I wouldn't have even have thought to ask.

Re: Orthodox Ceremony

The Romanian churches by me are tiny and the priests are pretty strict.

I am going to try the Greek Cathedral in Manhattan and see if they might do it for us.

just like the catholic church each one is different, some are more strict than others. Some now are more lenient, i never saw it in a RO ceremony but ive been seeing in the GO ceremony, the father walking the bride. Definitely go over the whole ceremony with your priest so you know exactly what will happen and you wont have any surprises

Thank you. I wouldn't have thought to ask about the walking down the isle. They don't go over too much right now, suppose to meet about 6 months before the wedding to go over everything, but I think it is a little more relaxed, cause they say the ceremony is an hour long, where I've heard of them being 2 hours long. I know it's strict in some sense, but I like the whole symbolism that they do, to me that makes it romantic.
Thank you again. I will make sure I ask a lot of questions when we do meet with the church.

Well thats good then that they'll do it 6 months before, maybe ask fh and his family to let you in on a few other things they might've forgotten to tell you.

Yeah my parents had to do the close to 2 hour ceremony lol but theres always 2 choices the way it is in the catholic religion where you decide between a ceremony or a mass, one is longer than the other.

I also love alot of what it symbolizes and it can be beautiful. Are you getting married in a greek church? most of them look so amazing

here are a few links, maybe help you find out more and understand things a little bit better
