Our church is ridiculous!!!

As if they haven't given us enough trouble as it is.. they strike again!!

Basic background.. FH was baptized episcopalian but made his communion and confirmation at St James Church (catholic church). I also belonged to that church growing up so we decided to get married there.

When we met with them over a year ago they were fine with this and said nothing about it. plus we figured why wouldn't they be fine with it? we both have been going to this church since we were kids..

Fast forward to today.. less than 2 months to our wedding, we get a phone call. Its the church.. they are claiming that since FH was baptized episcopalian they can not marry us unless we file for a mixed marriage through the diocese..So FH explains the whole thing again and tells them that he made his communion and confirmation there without any problems. So they call us back and say they have absolutely no record of FH ever going there.. WHAT?!? funniest part.. FH was an alter boy at the church for many years.. and yet they have NO record of him?? I mean cmon.. and also thanks for waiting until the last minute to check

Luckily we have his communion and confirmation certificates around here somewhere, we just have to tear apart the house to find them. Totally ridiculous. Of course they had no problems taking $750 dollars from us to get married though

We are having a family friend that is a priest marry us and I can't wait until 2 days before when they decide that is suddenly a problem!!!

This is what kills me about the Catholic Church. To me its almost like extortion. There are loopholes and money dished out for everything

I have never heard of that. I was baptized AND confirmed Episcopalian but all our (Catholic) church wanted was to see that I was baptized, period... they didn't even ask about the other stuff and we def didn't have to file for a 'mixed marriage....... ***???

I don't understand how the catholic church can attract and keep parishoners if they make it so difficult to be a member. I would like to think that God is all-welcoming, forgiving and loving. It's a shame that the people who run certain parishes don't share that view.

That's why I don't go to church any more. I am lucky in that the parish we are getting married in is a very progressive parish, but they are very difficult to find these days.

The church was the one thing FH wanted (I'm Jewish & Catholic and not religious at all... well then again neither is he!) so I said ok... If I could just go back and stand my ground. We went to go pay when we handed in our music selections and they were like, oh we need 3 separate checks. They never called us about pre-cana either, when we called and were like whats going on they were like, oh, no one called you? I did go to a ceremony there last week and it was really nice and not too long for a mass.

Thats what I said!!

and even if we did have to FH went to this church since he was a little kid and worked for them and now all of a sudden he doesn't exist to them. They have all my records but none of his? So weird. He is actually there right now trying to figure it all out.

We found his certificates last night (thank god I didnt throw out the box of junk his mom gave us lol) and we even found the booklet for confirmation with our names in it.

ITA! I could go on and on about the Catholic Church but this is not the place to do that. I hope everything works our for you! I was in a wedding back in 2002 at that church and it is really beautiful and the mass was short. I'm sure everything will work out in the end just don't let them bully you.
