Our Kitty needs your help!!!

we will be away for 14 days on our HM.

which is better for kitty:

1. leave her at our house and my parents will come by every other day and ensure that she has clean water and enough food. they will probably stay an hour or so and play with her.

2. board her for those 2 weeks.


FI and I completely disagree on this. he thinks #1 is fine, since she sleeps 90% of the time anyway and why spend the $$ on boarding her.

I disagree - i think only one hour every other day of 'human' time is not enough and at the kennel there will be more interaction for her.

what do you guys think??

1 hour every other day doesn't seem like a lot - though, from what I understand, cats REALLY don't like going to a kennel. I think they just really don't like having a major change like that.
That being said, I would probably go with #1. Any chance of getting a friend to come in for just a shot time on the days your parents can't?

That's a tough one. I have a 'built-in' sitter since our landlord watches Lucy any time we travel...he'll feed her her normal twice a day meals and play with her. The one time I had to rely on someone to come to the house once a day (cause twice was too much to ask, I felt) I was a wreck the whole time - wondering if she was being fed, stimulated, etc.

Personally, if I didn't have my landlord to help out and was going away for 2 weeks...I would board her.

Can you bring her to your parents house for the 2 weeks?

I think she'll be ok with staying home with visits from your parents, if it can more then every other day it would probably be better.

Your kitty will probably be mad when you get home but will get over quickly enough.

Can your parents come evry day?? My inlaws came over everyday. Well, they came over twice to feed him in th emorning, and night. They live so close.
I would say have them come over once a day and make sure he has fresh food/water, clean littler box.

Cats get WAAAAY more attached to places than people (makes ya feel real good, right?!) I have three at home. Cats in general are very territorial and would much prefer to stay in their own environment.

For my honeymoon, my mom popped over every other day to check on them. They did FINE and were happy to see us when we came home. I think it was much easier for everyone.

i am going to BEG my parents to come over everyday. they are fairly close to us (about 10 minute drive). my parents have a huge dog, which is why i would not want to leave kitty with them.

i think if i can convince them to go over everyday, that will work. heck - maybe FMIL can alternate days with my parents!! it's her grand-kitty, too!!!!

When FH and I go away for a short trip my Mom and brother come over to feed and take care of our 2 kitties, but they are alone most of the time.

For long trips, my brother house/cat sits. The cats love him, and he loves having a house to himself. Is there someone in your family, or maybe a close friend, who would be interested in doing this?

#1...Cats do not like to leave their homes!!!

I would ask your parents to come over every day. Every other day is not enough, IMO, but boarding can be traumatic to a kitty, especially if there are other cats and dogs there anyway. We used to leave our cat with a boarder who was very loving and would take him out and play with him and took very good care of him, but he had to sleep in a cage in a room with other animals. My cat was terrified of his own shadow, so he always came home very traumatized. He wouldn't come near us for a day or two and wouldn't eat normally right away either.

You need to take your kitty's personality into consideration in making this decision, but I think kitty would be much happier having the run of the house and being alone than being with a stranger and other animals and you not being there to comfort him.

Tough one...I will have a similar dilema but its either have someone check in on her or take her to the inlaws....She is going to the inlaws.

The thought of the kennel doesnt make me happy....i would have her checked on...at least she is in her own space...less anxiety i think.

Every other day was fine for us and we have 3 cats! Maybe other ppl think it's better to go every day if you have one cat, but since we have three, we have extra large sized food and water dishes (and litterboxes!) so it lasts them a long time.

Cats are very resilient... don't worry!

we are actually leaving our cat alone for the weekend...shes done it before...granted she does get pissed at us...


but she was pissed at us when we were away for 3 weeks for our HM....even though my friend stayed in the house almost every day...

cats typically do not do well when you bored them. Can a friend stay over night one or two nights per week?
My sister stayed with my cat while we were on our HM. My cat cannot stay home one night alone- she gets very upset over that.

I think the kitty should stay home or find someone you trust to take care of it. Kennels are rough on little guys.

xel...funny but true...you can be petting her and she's purring away and then all of a sudden she decides that she doesn't like it and attacks...

shes siamese though...and I hear that most of them have short tempers...

when we get home after a weekend...she just screams a lot...

Well I had a Russian Blue. This was in Texas
Notorious for loyality.. .. *ahem* to a fault.

If you came to my house and didn't properly introduce yourself to the cat (you know just ignore it's there and go about your business) it would piss him off.

I remember I had a date over and i was in the kitchen making drinks.. all I heard was ***FART**** I stopped dead, thinking 'Great, here's a keeper'. The guy says 'Uhm, I know you're not going to believe me, but it wasn't me' Thinking the poor man is embarassed I walk out to the living room with the drinks and to say it's alright when I see my cat walk over his lap with his tail up and... **FART** He kept walking back and forth doing that while I giggled half to death.

From that point forward he was referred to as the Gray Gaseous One.


Lost Sinatra to the thieves next door. I left him in Texas while I set up here in NY. When the neighbors next to my parents moved out, they took the cat.

All is well though, FH has a cat that looked so much like mine that it's the reason we had our first date!
