We woke up to find that someone had deliberately flattened our mailbox! The tire tracks showed they had clearly crossed over the yellow line to run up on our lawn and knock it flying about 8 feet.
It wasn't in great shape to begin with and we were planning on replacing it, but now it's in two pieces on the ground, and with the ground frozen it will be difficult to replace soon.
We checked up and down our street, and a few other mailboxes look like they have been 'repaired' with rope and such, holding them to posts but we couldn't tell if it was recent or not.
We did report it to the police and they said to check in a few days to see if any kids had been caught. A long shot, but worth a try.
We also wondered if it was someone with something against the former owner's live in BF - he had a home improvement business and we've had a few people coming to the house looking for him, and mailings from collection agencies too.

Re: Our mailbox was bruttaly destroyed!
Sorry to hear that!! It could possibly be a bunch of bored kids/teens messing around.
I actually have a friend who was telling me that the have a 'mailbox mob' that goes around the neighbhorhood smashing everyone mailbox...but they can never catch them!! One of the neighbors encased their new mailbox in stone...it actually looks beautiful - but probably cost a fortune!

Karen.. I am so sorry to hear that. It kills me how people are!!
When we moved into our house. I wanted to move our mailbox from next to the untility pole to the other side of the driveway and out neighbor told us not to because the kids will knock it down if it on the other side. When its next to the utility pole they cant get a good swing on the bat.
Is there a untilty pole on your property that you can put it next to?

Re: Our mailbox was bruttaly destroyed!
Unfortunately, no utility pole, but the whole front is in need of HGTV's Curb Appeal team, so we are discussing options. I'm thinking a few decorative boulders, creatively bordered by shrubs, so any wayward SUV or truck will take out its gas tank and other critical underside parts if it trys to take out the shrubs and mailbox!
lisa makes a good point...also I know in the neighborhood next to mine growing up this was a big issue...and the people moved their mailboxes 90 degrees...so the opening points down the street (in the direction the mailman comes) not into/across the street...
i always assumed that this made it more difficult to 'hit'
I don't think it is animosity...just stupid kids that have licenses but can't do anything better with their time

Re: Our mailbox was bruttaly destroyed!
We've had our destroyed twice -once because we have no sidewalks and the plow driver couldn't negotiate the curb and took down our whole block's mailboxes!! You think after he plowed the first few, he would've stopped.
The second time was about 11 p.m. one summer night and DH and I were watching the news, and someone picked up our yellow recycle bucket and flung it into our mailbox while driving by in a car. Not only did we have to pick up all the recycles and broken glass, but our mailbox suffered a beating.
We can't really move ours, there's no trees or utility poles. Our neighbors is on our side of the property too, so it looks as if we have 2 mailboxes!!

Re: Our mailbox was bruttaly destroyed!
This is like in the Lost Boys where the vampire gang drives around knocking off mailboxes
Sorry, bad habit of movie association...
DH and I had to put up our own mailbox, and I am not really sure how secure it is. Since the ground is frozen, we could only dig so far.

Sorry to hear about your mailbox!
Ours was put to rest over the Christmas break , which from what I understand is a popular time for 'bored' teenagers. Although no one else's was destroyed so I was starting to take it personally.... I think someone might have accidently ran off the road and ran it over though.

Re: Our mailbox was bruttaly destroyed!
This has happened to my in-laws mailbox for YEARS. They finally put up a not so nice looking mailbox with a metal post that sat in concrete! This has helped the problem for a few years now but they live on a busy road with accidents and they are used to it now, lol!

Re: Our mailbox was bruttaly destroyed!
That's terrible-I'm sorry to hear this happened. Can you attach it to your house? I've never lived anywhere where the mailbox wasn't so maybe that's a dumb question.
