OUR STORY - very very very LONG
We meet on March 17, 2000.
I was out celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with a few friends at a local bar in Brooklyn, NY called Lillie’s. Being a single girl and out for a night of fun, I grab one of my friends and said “come on, lets bump into to people!” Little did I know later that night I was going to bump into the answer to my dreams. After a while of pushing and shoving, the place was so packed bumping was not an option we decided to go outside for some air. Next thing I know I feel someone grab my arm and I hear those 3 little words that send my mind racing and my heart wheeling……I LOVE YOU.
He had seen it once in an old black and white movie……the woman walked by, the man says I love you, she swoons, and they lived happily ever after......He never thought it would actually work. 8 years later and he’s still saying those 3 little words and 8 years later those 3 little words are still sending make my heart wheeling.
After 2 weeks of dating was the first time he asked me to marry him, and I remember it like it was yesterday. We were on the phone watching Beverly Hills 90210 when David asked Donna to marry him. Being the sap that I am, I started crying and next thing I hear through the phone is “Will you marry me?” and I said YES. A few weeks later I moved in with him.
We both come from large low-middle income families so we both knew that we were going to be paying for a wedding on our own. After careful consideration we decided to hold off on a wedding and all the things that a wedding brings.
Fast forward to December 21, 2006…………..
It was a couple of days before Christmas and we were getting really for the holidays. Being that his family lives upstate NY and my family is here in the area we usually go upstate for a couple of days before and spend Christmas Eve with his family and make the drive back down Christmas morning to have dinner with my family. On December 21st we went out for drinks with a couple of friends before we head off the next day. On the drive home he pulls over because we were having trouble with our truck. (Friends like to call her Christine since we believe she is possessed) He pops the hood and tries to figure out what the problem is this time. Next thing I know he comes over to my window and asks me to come look, he thinks he figured it out. I get out of the truck and he is in front of it on his knee with his hand under the truck. I ask what the problem is and he pulls his hand out, with this BEAUTIFUL ring and says “I think it is this f-ing thing!” (You’ve got to love romance) I proceed to scream and cry in the middle of the street at 2:00 on Friday Morning.
We decided that we would have a 2 ½ year engagement and get married in upstate NY on June 6, 2009.
On January 21, 2007 my mother went into the hospital for the first of many times. My mother was a very active woman. At the young age of 70 she still worked 3 P/T jobs. During the holidays of 2006 she developed what her DR thought was Pneumonia. On January 21 my sister brought her to the hospital for dehydration. The hospital discharged her 2 weeks later. She slowly lost all her energy and only got sicker. We brought her to NYU hospital and the DR’s there diagnosed her with a rare blood disorder called Good Pastures. It is a form of vasculitis that your blood cells attach your lungs and kidneys. Chemo was the treatment. The chemo destroyed her immune system and her body developed all sorts of infections. On April 17, 2007 she had emergency surgery to repair her intestines that had exploded. We didn’t think she was going to make it. The DR’s had little hope for her. She is a very strong woman and pulled though. During the summer she was in treatment to get her back walking and eating on her own. She did well and was sent home that September. While being home her aides couldn’t give her the proper care that she needed. She started slipping backwards. She wasn’t eating and couldn’t walk. The best think for her at that point was to put her into a home. She isn’t in much pain and is doing as well as can be expected. But at this it is only a matter of time.
January of this year again brings sad news. My dad who had just turned 81 was diagnosed with prostate cancer. The DR’s feel that he will pull though fine with Chemo treatments.
We discussed canceling the wedding and just getting married at the local court house. But I just couldn’t do it. Although my mother lost her sight to one of the infections, I still wanted her to “see” me walk down the aisle. It means the world to me to have my parents there during the most important day of my life.
We are now getting married in 5 months and with the news of the up coming wedding my mother is now thriving. It truely will be the happiest day of my life.
