out of town planning - wedding dress

Hi Ladies,

I'm planning my '09 LI wedding from Phoenix, AZ. This site and your help have been so wonderful! I have a specific question about the wedding gown. Should I buy the dress in NY and shipped to AZ for alterations or should I buy the dress in AZ and later shipped to NY? Has anyone bought a gown and had alterations done in a different state? Advice appreciated!

I met a girl planning a LI wedding from Arizona in Sandy's Shoes. I wonder if you are her! It was like back in the summer though.. I planned my LI wedding from NJ - only 90 minutes away, I did all the dress stuff in my home state and just brought it with me for my wedding day.

it's difficult... if you have family? or friends in the NY area... I would recommend (as timely as it is and hard to coordinate flights)
I would highly recommend finding a dress in the tristate area / NY and have your alterations done on the East coast. It will take time and planning and a couple trips out east but tie them in with all the other trips for planning you may need to be out there for.

I would NOT recommend shipping your dress or travel with it unless it's a car ride 30-45 minutes. JMO

p.s. I bought my dress at a shop in my home state NJ. While I live in FL and traveled for my dress fittings... most places especially bridal shops... (not DB) make their appts off their out of town/ STATE brides.

I think it would be easier to buy it in AZ and have it altered in AZ, I hear finding a good steamstress is a task and sometimes when you get your dress from the store they cap the alterations.

I live in FL, got married in NY. I happened to find my dress in FL, did all my alterations here. It was only 2 fittings. I carried my dress on the plane the week before the wedding. I have to add that Southwest was so accommodating, they sang us a song, and gave us a bottle of champagne, and cleared an over head bin to lay my dress in. I brought it to get steamed in NY 2 days before the wedding. It worked out perfectly.

that sounds like the most convenient way to do it. just plan to have it pressed/steamed a few days before the wedding.

i would by the dress in AZ and have all the alterations done and then carry it on the plane with you just to keep your eye on it!

I agree!

i dont have to Fly to my weddings but i bought my dress in MASS and plan on having it altered here and then bringing it to NY with me.

I live in VA, got married in NY. Bought my dress in NY and had the alterations done there. I scheduled them around my other appointments, so it worked for me. I didn't want to have my dress shipped or travel with it before the wedding and then figure out how to get it pressed/steamed, etc.

i live in buffalo...
i bought my dress here and i will alter it here
if i fly to LI in june i will bring it as my carary on if i drive down i will take it in the car
but there is no way in H E L L i would ship my dress or let it out of my sight so close to my wedding
