Own or Lease?

Own or Lease?

While I was laying in bed trying to fall asleep last night I was thinking about my car, odd I know, whether it was worth it to buy it or lease it because that way I never REALLY own it. What do you do?

Sorry thinking about my pool going in monday - the poll should say HOW DO YOU PAY FOR YOUR CAR - not pool

hehehehe your poll says 'how do you pay for your POOL!'

I know what's on your mind!!!

I own a 97 mercury sable. I bought it cash, used from an old guy in Nassau.

I bought my Honda cash in '99 (new). My DH finances his '03 Altima. It's just insane how much more than list price he is paying for it by financing. He didn't have any other options (short of leasing, and he wanted to buy), but it is costing sooo much money in the long run.

my FH too - it's an 03 Monte Carlo. His parents convinced him that it was a good idea.

less than 6 months car payments for him are equal to what I paid for my car!!!

I just turned in my leased VW cabrio, and I will NEVER, EVER lease again. Yes, your monthly payments are lower, but in the end, you have absolutely no equity in this car, and you still have to spend buttloads of money on repairs and maintenance for something that won't be yours. And, don't even get me started about turn-in fees SO, this time, I bought a car (used - 2001 Subaru Outback for $15k). We put the balance on a zero-interest credit card and will pay it off by the end the zero-interest period. So, now I have title, and NO INTERST... doesn't get much better than that!

don't have one right now, but saving to buy in cash. I don't want to finance or lease.

I usually buy....my commute is too far for leasing to be an option

Re: Own or Lease?

I don't believe in leasing. I want to own the car after a few years, and plan on keeping it for a while, so leasing doesn't make sense for me. I am still driving my 1991 car and will keep driving it until it dies. It is cheaper - no payments, lower insurance and until it starts dying, the yearly repair bills are lower than what I would have to make in payments on a new car.

Re: Own or Lease?

I leased a car a few years ago. I definitely regretted it. We ended up moving to the city and I had to get rid of it. I was above my milage limit and had been in a very very small fender bender, but the dealership said because of those two things they would not take it back without huge fees. I ended up having to take out a bank loan to buy it off the lease, then sold it privately. I lost A LOT of money on the whole thing (about $5000) not including the two years I pumped money into the payments for nothing.

I definitely recommend taking out a loan and buying the car. If you can afford to pay for it fully, then that is even better! Leasing has so many rules and regulations - and life changes so much.

Good luck!

I'm financing my Jeep Cherokee because I got 0.9% ...

DH is financing his Chrysler 300.

Re: Own or Lease?

We finance one of our cars (Hyundai Sonata, which DH drives to work) and we own our Jeep Grand Cherokee outright .

The Jeep is older and we bought it cash from DH's brother - I LOVE IT. But if it wasn't for the fact that it's my 'station car' and I only drive it 10 minutes a day, back and forth, Monday-Friday, we would NEVER own an SUV (its a total gas guzzler)

Before I met and married DH, I alwyas leased my vehicles (since , as I said above, I only drive 10 minutes a day) BUT I will never lease again - too many weekend miles go on either vehicle, and overall leasing is a losing proposition..

I bought a 2 year old chevy Prizm in 2003 and I am financing it for $135 a month. Danielle is leasing her 2002 civic and has 16 payments left ugh....

Never lease for 4 years

Re: Own or Lease?

Lease only. I like a new car every 3 years. I don't put on a ton of miles and I usually turn it in on time and with low miles. Some leasing companies even give you $$ back for that. Honda did. We lease both a Pathfinder and an Accord. It's not for everyone, but it's a depreciative item and I would rather invest my money in something that appreciates.

Leasing is great if you can come up with a downpayement every three years. I leased then bought at the end....STUPIDEST (is that a word?) DECISION EVER!!! Won't ever do that again. I could have had the Lexus RX 330 by now for what I've paid for my '98 Saturn. I'm BUYING my next car.

Re: Own or Lease?

I leased twice and totally got screwed on miles so this time around I bought. The payment was awful though but lucky for me when we got married DH paid it off so now I totally own it.
But I will own it for a long time since my DH is not one to buy new cars ever and he likes to drives cars until they can't drive anymore hence the 1980 rusted MR2 he still drives around, thank goodness he has a jeep as well which isn't falling apart.
