Paint or sand floors first??

We're trying to decide which should be done first. DH & I thought the floors, but 2 of his friends recently said that we should paint first!

What did everyone else do? What are the advantages to painting before doing the floors since the baseboards would have to be touched up?

I dont know which way is technicaly correct but i do know this. No matter what they tell you those machines kick up a lot of dust. I think I did the walls first.

We've been remodeling rooms and we painted first, then had them come in and refinish the floors.

We didn't put on the baseboards until after the floors were done. We primed and painted the baseboards, nailed them up and then touched up all the nail holes with wood filler & more paint afterwards.

We were told by our friend who installs floors to do what Jenny did. It seems logical.

I agree paint first. But make sure you leave plenty of time for the paint to dry before refinishing, otherwise the dust will stick to the walls.

We learned the hard way. The first room in our house we had done was the master bedroom. We painted it first, and were going to do carpet, however, when we picked up the old wall to wall carpet, we had beautiful oak wood floors underneath, so we decided to have the floors re-done. No matter how neat and how much plastic they hung, the bedroom got covered in that fine yellow sawdust. We literally had to wash the entire room, every wall, and every window. We then did another coat of paint over it. It was double work for us :(

When we got to doing the living room and dining room, it was much better that we had the floors done first, as it kicked up dust again, but a quick wipe down and then primer to paint was the easier route.

my fiance does floors on the side-his BIL has his own business--you should paint first!--yes, the floors will kick up sawdust-but if you get a paint spill, they can sand it out.....when the guys are done sanding, they usually vacuum the dust up! let me know if you have any more questions and i will ask my fi

YES, PAINT first. You dont want to get paint all over your newly sanded, and stained floors. We painted firts, and Im glad we did

Thanks everyone!! I think we'll paint first and worry about the dust later!!

I didn't even think about paint spills on my new floors!! D'OH!!
