Painting Advice

I just wanted to give everyone my two cents on buying paint. We spent the $$ and used ben moore paint on the upper level of my hi ranch and it cost a little bit more and I wasnt really even sure if it was worth it or not.

We started redoing our office and went to home depot and got behr paint. There is such a difference in the coverage and the quality of the paint.
One gallon of the behr barely covered this tiny room. The BM paint cover nicer spreads better and cleans up easier.

So my advice is spend a couple of extra $$ in the begining and get the BM in the long run it will probally come out cheaper..

ALSO - pay money for quality brushes - it's worth it! Purdy brushes, while more expensive, are far superior to the typical nylon ones you get in packs of 3 and 4.

Happy painting!

Totally agree - you don't paint that often - so invest the extra money to do it right.

Re: Painting Advice

Well, you are comparing a high end paint to THE WORST PAINT EVER!

Behr is AWFUL. I don't know how they use it on all those TLC shows!

Other paints are good too. Sears is very good, if you don't want to spend a lot of money.

Benjamin More is supposed to last a long time though, so it is probably very good for something you don't want to change often.

Oh yes, my Dad (ever the fix-er upper) drilled this into me years ago. He said only Benjamin Moore and if you by that Behr crap you are not my daughter... your grandfather 'the contractor' will roll around in his grave.

I also have quite the collection of Purdy brushes.
I really need my own home improvement show

I agree that Ben Moore paint is better than Home Depot. However, if you want the BEST quality paint on the market, I suggest you try out Sherwin Williams.

We used their new Duration Home paint for our second bedroom and it was amazing. The previous homeowner painted the room turquoise blue and canary yellow stripes.

The Sherwin Williams paint covered like nobody's business. I am very pleased.

That's also invaluable advice. It's worth it to buy good brushes. DO NOT BUY CHEAP BRUSHES or else you will get what you pay for. It makes a big difference.

I totally agrree with you. BM paint is the best. it covers even imperfections so nicely. But i just wanted to let everyone that my FH and I just tried Ralph Lauren paint for our kitchen b/c they had the EXACT color we needed and it also was GREAT!! i think it is just as great as BM. Behr is terrible!!!

Re: Painting Advice

Funny that my painter actually recommended the Behr paint over BM.

I did my whole apartment in BM two years ago... and its now cracking all over the place.

My bedroom was in the worst shape so he re-painted in Behr. We will see how that works out.

I actually had a really bad experience with Ralph Lauren paint because it's a tinting process so be careful if you're going with their paints. We had to repaint an entire room.

you may have needed a primer first. Did you put a duller finish over a more glossy finnish?

Re: Painting Advice

We just bought and painted all BM paint. Like 7 gallons so far!

Not only do the colors EXACTLY match the swatch, they are beautiful on the walls.

We used Behr in out apt. and the diff. is amazing. The coverage on a first coat alone is far better than Behr.

I also can't agree more with buying good tools. Purdy brushes and there polyester rollers are great. I really believe that good brushes and rollers are the 'backbone' of painting.
