FH and i were with his moms friend this weekend and started talking about her dress for the wedding (FMIL was not there while we had this convo). FMIL always complained about wearing black but finally agreed to it, anyway her friend told her to accessorize with jewelry (duh) and she said she had nothing nice. So the friend suggested we buy FMIL a nice colored pendant (ruby, aquamarine, emerald, etc) as her gift so that she had some color on her t the wedding.
Umm heres the thing...we were not planning on getting parent gifts (aside from photo albums). we were taken back by the comment so didnt say anything to her friend.
so here is my question... are we wrong to not get her anything??? do we ignore it and just not give her anything or do we approach the friend and tell her we will not be getting her jewelry so she doesnt get FMILs hopes up???

Re: parent gifts?
We are getting the parents gifts. FH's parent have both passed away, but BOTH my parents are re-married, so we are getting gifts for my dad, step mom, mom and step dad-
AND we are getting a special gift for FH's oldest sister because she has kinda filled the role of his parents during this whole process.
AND I think that while its up to you, its really nice to get the parents something. And I have been in quite a few weddings, and the parents always got something. I think the standard for moms is jewelry for the day of. And for dads is like, 'father of the bride/groom' cufflinks.
BUT its not a generally required thing, you know? I don't know if it would be 'expected' or not.

I think it's completely up to you. If you plan on giving the album as a gift and that's it then ignore the friend. Personally, I'm giving more to our parents because they have helped us a lot along the way but you should give whatever you feel most comfortable with.

Re: parent gifts?
well that is also part of it...the only thing his parents have given us is grief and aggravation!!! I feel like if they were more supportive (both emotionally and financially) I would want to give them something. but they are not around and they are giving us a very small amount towards the wedding. I am torn

Re: parent gifts?
One of our gifts to our parents are going to be the albulms, but we are making it ourselves from shutterfly or a site like that so its more personal...
we might get our dads a golf gift certificate to go golfing together (so lucky they all love each other and can do things they love together!)
and maybe a piece of jewelry for our moms?? not sure yet!

lol- you aren't terrible...lol...but, for me, me and FH are paying for our wedding, but we still actually never spoke about gifts, we just knew we were doing it because all of his siblings did it, and all of mine did it. So, I don't think we have a choice!!!
for the moms, go to weddingfactorydirect.com, or even amazon. You can find really well priced jewelry sets (necklace and earrings) there. Seriously, weddingfactory is the best site ever. I am getting my DOJ there. Its SUCH great prices.
for the dads, you can go online and order the cufflinks...they have fun ones and ones that are a little more formal.
