Parent VENT

Parent VENT

So I called my parents today, to tell them about the band FH and I found. My dad immediately gives me a long list of songs that he thinks I should have. We don't have th same taste in music, so I told him no. His response:

'Well, I'm paying for this wedding, so I have a say.'

Um, no, actually, you don't. It's not your wedding, it's mine, and I'm not spending my night doing the hustle or something b/c your friends will have fun. Mine will be sitting on the side.

But his insistence on chosing the music isn't what annoyed me. It really hurt when my dad threw the 'I'm paying for it' comment out there. I know he's paying for it, and I'm grateful... otherwise FH and I would be getting married by Elvis in the Little White Wedding Chapel. But I want to be the one that calls the shots. I don't want either of my parents to use $$$ to guilt trip me into doing something.

Maybe we should just go to Vegas.

Am I being a brat?

you are not being a brat, I understand how you are feeling. I feel the same way. My mom is like that also, my parents had a wedding store so she KNOWS how everything is SUPPOSED to be. And that really ticks me off, because i love that she knows, but i also want to experience it on my own. We are always battling...

back to your dilema... try coming to an agreement. Mix u p the songs. Unfortunelty you are going to have people there of all different ages and they aren't all going to liket he same music, so you will need to mix it up. compromise, have him choose 5 or 6 (or so ?)that he REALLY wants to hear. You will be surprised, many of your friends might actually enjoy some of his music.

i agree with the above comment. It's your day, but you should let him pick a few songs if that is his only request for the whole day. If your parents try to manipulate all the planning, then you have to set down the law.

Thanks girls.

I really don't mind having a mix of music; that wasn't the real issue. I don't want my parents to try and take over my wedding b/c they're paying for half of it. I'm going to try to talk to my dad today, and try and make him understand where I'm coming from... we'll see.

Set the ground rules right now. It's great that your parents are helping but that doesn't mean it has strings attached. I agree that a gift of money for the wedding is very nice but should not have conditions. It's a gift. Would you give someone a gift and tell them they can only use it during certain times or for certain reasons?

Maybe that's how you have to approach it.

As far as the songs go, most likely you will give the band a short list of songs that they must play and ones that you don't want and the band will feel out your crowd and play what's appropriate.

You may want to include a few songs for your dad but overall you want to make the whole party happy. As long as they play what you want, they should mix it up.

Good luck.
