Parents moving....

Parents moving....

I was at my parents today and they're beginning to look into retiring in the Carolinas.
I'm very close to my parents and cried the whole way home...
I understand that for money reasons they need to retire off LI and I can respect that...

It won't happen for at least 3 years but they research and planning will begin soon...part of me wants to be selfish and have them here when we have children in the future

Does anyone else have parents that retired out of state?

This is so hard!

I just want to give you and tell you I would totally feel the same way. I am SUPER close to my mom and would be devastated.

However, the Carolinas are not TOO far and you'll ahve a great place to visit! (OR, you could just hurry up and have kids and then maybe they wont move )

thanks for the hugs...
I know it isn't too far but it just isn't the 10 minutes like now...

My mother is talking about this now, except to Florida. Emotions aside, it will be best for her in many ways.

It's much less expensive, the weather is milder, they are better prepared for elder care. Plus it's not that far away and it's a nice place to visit.

When I throw in emotions, it's not so easy.

My parents moved to Arizona when I was in my early 20's in grad school. My mom has severe rhuemetoid arthritis and the climate was better for her (we were living in Michigan at the time).

My brother moved there after he got out of college, and so he's there with my nieces too.

It's not easy being so far away - especially as they get older, and I know they wish we were closer.

We're actually considering the Carolina's for retirement ourselves!

It is oppositte for me. I am the one who is thinking about moving down south away from my entire family. It is not easy being away from your family but it IS really expensive here and they will probably be able to relax and enjoy life more without such a high cost of living.

if this is any hope for you...

my parents told my sister and me in 1989 that they were going to be looking at houses in FL (I was still in HS at the time)

fast forward 15 years later...they haven't moved...but instead are looking for a small house in FL that my mom can send my dad when he gets too annoying in the winter...

my in laws have lived in florida since my dh was 18 and just starting college. his father was offered a great job and couldnt pass it up. dh was living with his grandmother untill i came into the picture and with him out of the house she moved to florida as well. i think he handled his parents a lot better but his grandma leaving broke his heart. you should have seen how happy he was to see her at the wedding. she is 86 and he danced with her to young at heart my frank sinatra. i know ill always be his number 2 girl and thats just fine. i wouldnt be too sad your parents know that you are happy and safe and know you will be fine. they have to do whats best for them, just get a great long disyance plan and just think you will have a winter getaway
