Partial birth abortions

Partial birth abortions

How do you guys feel about the senate banning the practice called Partial Birth Abortions? I did extensive research on this topic for grad school and found it interesting as to how this procedure is defined. Typically these types of abortions do not occur unless there is something medically wrong and the mother is in danger.

To tell you the truth I wasn’t shocked when I heard this, since it is it George W’s administration. But it’s kind of scary to think that they would rather risk a mother’s life.

Just out of curiosity, what do you guys think of this new decision?
(there’s more info on msnbc.com or cnn.com)

I am against third trimester abortions UNLESS the mother's life is in danger OR a multiple's life is in danger (does that make sense? the wekaer multiple is somehow endangering the stronger?)

I can't believe how conservative this county is getting

That depends.
I dont know the particulars of the law that passed.

I am against PBA's in such that a woman decides in her 3rd trimester that she doesnt want the child.

I am always for the saftey of the mother. If aborting a child during birth will save the mother but lose the child, I would save the mother.

It is my understanding the intent of the law was meant for just that. To prevent the first while protecting the last.

Im a die-hard pro-choice advocate. But still I don't think 'choice' applies to carring a child for 8months then deciding you don't want it anymore. I mean give it up for adoption at that point.

Im also a Texan and a Republican. Im one twisted bunny!

I wish this law wasn't passed and was left up as a choice... I think for a person to make this kind of a decision in a 3rd trimester - it would not be an easy thing, and I would think a woman wouldn't just abort the child b/c she changed her mind at this point in the pregnancy.

I hope this bill will not have much more stringent consequences, such as restricting the rights for earlier term abortions.

I agree with you Erica 100%!!

I am also against multiple abortions. Once is a mistake...more than one is using it as a form of birth control!!

I disagree, b/c once can be a mistake, and once a rape (in which case i would think it would be earlier than third trimester abortion).

I think that we can agree that in cases like this....that are far and few in between...an exception can be made...but I do agree...it had better be made WAY before the 3rd trimester!!

I agree with you 100%, Alina. Furthermore, I am Pro-CHOICE, not pro-abortion. It is not my place, nor do think it's the place of our government, to tell a woman what she can and cannot do with her body.

On a side note, Partial Birth Abortion is NOT a medical term - it is a term coined by the anti's who want to instill shock into those who are not read up on the specifics of Roe v Wade or reproductive rights.

Grrrr...this news really chps my a s s.

whether I 'believe' in PBA or not, I do not believe that the government has any right to legislate what medical doctors can and cannot do in the interest of their patients... the senators have not gone to medical school.

Re: Partial birth abortions

A partial birth abortion is called, I believe, a 'dilatation and evacuation.' or D&E. It's not the same as a D&C (dilatation and curettage), or a diltation and suction curettage, which are performed to terminate early pregnancy.

Anyway...

I think there needs to be a law stating that partial birth abortion is illegal UNLESS it can be medically proven that the life of the mother is in danger.

I believe these limits are necessary because there WILL be women out there who 'change their minds' and terminate the pregnancy in the third trimester.

Let's face it, there are women who throw their newborns in dumpsters like trash. As horrible as it is, they still do it! So we can sit here and say, 'Oh, no! A woman would never terminate in the third trimester just because she changed her mind.' But we would be fooling ourselves.

There are all kinds in the world out there. And limits like this are sometimes needed to prevent senseless and wreckless acts.

I'm Pro-Choice, within reason.

You'll be hard-pressed to find a Dr who will perform an abortion in the 3rd trimester simply b/c the woman said 'Oops, I don't want this anymore'.

Re: Partial birth abortions

Hard-pressed, yes. Impossible? No way. Unfortunately, money talks and there are always those that can be bought. But then again, they are the same ones who tend to get around the laws anyway....

I totally agree that the gov't should not be involved in a woman's choice...but IMHO babies can live outside the womb from the 7th month on...I think thats pushing it...while I am 100% pro-choice 1st and 2nd trimester...I think that the babies rights have to start somewhere...but this is the debate of the ages...

Re: Partial birth abortions

I'm not ready to punish all women b/c of a few possible, shady Dr's. Bottom line - this is a personal decision that belongs OUT of the courts.

Republicans are talking about how brutal this 'procedure' makes our country - are they f*cking kidding me? Not punishing priests who rape children in our country, doesn't make us brutal? Taking education and food away from our children, while we go to war and murder innocents, doesn't make us brutal?

This is about control - control of a woman's body. There is no way anyone can convince me that a fetus' life is worth more than the existing life of the woman that is carrying it. By not allowing for medical acceptions in this legislation, this is saying that women don't matter, so long as they're the vehicle to bring more babies into our loving country. Bull. Sh*t.

Correct, money talks, which is why when bush signs it into law and one his daughters is in such shoes, they will have enough cash to pay some in 'insert country on choice' to do this, outside of the US legal system... But a regular woman may not have this option...

I cant wait till these freaking men are faced with their daughter or wives risking the chance of dying, I want to see them cry on national tv. Im so sick of men telling women what to do with their bodies. We as women will always have to deal with the consequences.

Its BS

Re: Partial birth abortions

Thank you Luna. Partial birth is to protect the woman its not for birth control in many instances. And to tell you the truth if a woman wants to use abortion as BC let her. Its her body and if she abuses it, her her decision.

Personally I think MEN ABORT CHILDREN EVERY DAY BY WALKING AWAY FROM THEIR UNBORN OFFSPRING, WHERE THE HELL IS BUSH ON THIS ONE.
