How do you guys feel about the senate banning the practice called Partial Birth Abortions? I did extensive research on this topic for grad school and found it interesting as to how this procedure is defined. Typically these types of abortions do not occur unless there is something medically wrong and the mother is in danger.
To tell you the truth I wasn’t shocked when I heard this, since it is it George W’s administration. But it’s kind of scary to think that they would rather risk a mother’s life.
Just out of curiosity, what do you guys think of this new decision? (there’s more info on msnbc.com or cnn.com)

Re: Partial birth abortions
Not sure how I missed this thread...but I am a firm believe that a women and her doctor should make medical decisions NOT some policitian sitting at a desk! A few years ago Oprah did a great show about women who were forced to make these types of decisions. These were NOT women who just made the decision easily and could care less. It is VERY rare for a women make this type of decision just because she feels like it... Just as it is very rare for a women to use abortion as a form birth control. Again, this is just an attempt for politicians to push their own religious agenda on us. Only you and a doctor can decide what is best for you...no law should do that.

Re: Partial birth abortions
I don't understand what is so convenient about carrying around a baby for 8 or 9 months only to abort it!
Anyone who carries a baby for 8 or 9 months plans on carrying it to term at the very least. Even if they do, G-d forbid, deposit that baby in the dumpster afterwards, they don't have P.B.A.
This is just another symptom of our poor educational systems.

Re: Partial birth abortions
ugh - we have to get George W out of office.
Not just for women's rights but to help the economy and foreign relations (we won't fix the damage he's done in our lifetimes)
I get so upset hearing his name. I try to be calm but I really think that this country would have been so much better off had Al Gore been President. Sure - the economy would have had some issues but how much worse could things be?

Re: Partial birth abortions
This is a little off the topic, but from my point of view to a real life situation, I would just like to say that the chances of us having our baby aborted in the 3rd trimester of pregnancy if we were put in an emergency medical situation is slim to none. I had a patient during my internship that came into the ER because she became unresponsive. She was 7 1/2 months pregnant with twins. Unfortunatly, it turns out that she had a massive brain hemmorage and was basically a vegetable. This happened suddenly, and nobody knew that she had this preexisting condition, and the pregnancy pushed it over the edge. What happened to this lady? She was put into the ICU on life support, until her babies are mature enough to be C-sectioned. In this day and age of medicine, there are VERY few circumstances in the 3rd trimester that warrant an abortion instead of a section or delivery, even in the worst of cases. An emergency c-section is fast, and can be done in an emergency situation. If the mother is in grave condition, they have an ethical responsibility to save her before they worry about baby, but if she is not going to survive they will save the baby, even if the mother cant be saved. I agree that the law should include some kind of section that allows this to be done if in fact the baby cannot be delivered however. The lawmakers are not doctors, and cannot decide what is right for a patient. JMO

Re: Partial birth abortions
The other reason for late term abortion-and really the more common one- is for fetal indications. These are usually serious anomalies that are not compatible with life. Like Imagin916 said, medical emergencies in the 3rd trimester usually result in the birth of a live but premature baby, whether its by induction of labor or a c-section. I'll keep saying this, abortion after the point that the baby could survive are extremely rare and already restricted by existing laws. There are only a few places in the country that it can legally be done. Tons of paperwork is required about the mother's health and/or the nature of the fetal anomaly. There are even checks to make sure there is no financial benefit to the referring physician. You can always find some quack looking to make a quick buck but that will always happen. That's already covered by the current laws.
