No, you don't need to show a passport to travel within the US -- meaning the 50 states. Under the new law, you do need a passport for the US Virgin islands, Canada, and I believe even Puerto Rico -- anywhere outside of the 50 states.

I'm not sure about the US Virgin Islands, but you do not need a passport to travel to Puerto Rico. Since it's a US territory, you are not considered to have left the US during travel to Puerto Rico.

You're right -- You don't need it for PR -- You DO need it for the Caribbean, Bermuda, Mexico, Canada, etc.
However, no US Virgin Islands were on the list of 'Caribbean Countries' requiring a passport... so you may not need one for the USVI!
Now I'm back to being confused. SORRY!

Re: Passport?
us virgin islands do not require a passport. only the following countries in the caribbean region do:
Anguilla Antigua and Barbuda Aruba Bahamas Bermuda British Virgin Islands Cayman Islands Dominica Dominican Republic Grenada Jamaica (except for business travel) Montserrat Netherlands Antilles St. Kitts and Nevis St. Lucia St. Vincent and the Grenadines Turks and Caicos
this is according to the travel.state.gov website
regardless of whether you need one or not---i think everyone should have their passport anyway!
