Passport Question--changing name, etc.

Passport Question--changing name, etc.

My passport is valid until February 2011 but since we are going on our Honeymoon in October 2010, I realize they may not let me fly out of country with a passport expiring within 6 months.

Does this mean that I can't change my name until after our honeymoon? Am I being stupid and missing something? What does everyone else do?

You can not change your name on your passport or any other documents without your marriage certificate, which you usually don't get until 2 to 4 weeks after the wedding.

I have not heard about not being able to fly out within 6 months before your passport expires. I know people that travelled. I guess if you are planning to come back after the passport expires that would be the only concern. You do have to wait until you get the certificate. My sister travelled with her maiden name.

A guy I work with just went to Ireland and had to renew his passport before he left b/c it was expiring within 6 months so he had to get a new one.

I am just realizing how annoying that is because you will have to get it renewed and then will have to change after you are married when you change your name.

Make sure you book your HM in your maiden name and not your new name.

I just called the Passport Agency with the same exact questions. Here's the answers I got:

-your passport expires on the date it expires. You are technically okay to travel until that date, but your airline is allowed to impose a different rule. 6 months SHOULD be okay, but check with your airline (NOT with the passport agency)

-you can renew your passport, and then get a free name change within a year of the renewal. I renewed mine in October 2009, so I can change my name for free up until Oct. 2010.

-Because the name changing could take some time (first for you to get your documents that prove it, then for the passport agency to do the changes), they recommend travelling with your maiden name passport.

I hope this helps. I actually found the passport agency people to be surprisingly knowledgable and pleasant... and I called them three times for random related questions! So don't hesitate to call if you have other scenarios to run by them!

HTH!

Wow, thank you so much for the help! This is very helpful and I really appreciate you looking into this! We booked the flights today (with maiden name obviously) and I figured if at worst, I'd have to pay for 2 passports in a year, really good to see that I can get a free one after I change my name! I will definitely check with both airlines if they are okay with the within 6 months of expiration. Thanks again!
