All of the gorgeous cakes i've seen have fondant but i've actually tasted it and i don't like it. Did you do fondant? How did it taste? Do they take the hard coating off before serving or how does it work?

What is the alternative to fondant and can it look as smooth and flat and be embellished/designed?

i lovvee fondant. and no, they dont peel it off. its just like two layers of icing - the dirty icing underneath and then the chewy fondant. tremendous!

try tasting a few samples at different spots. we used leonettis in greenvale and loved them.

See if your bakery can do the marshmallow fondant! My friend is a recreational baker and makes this on her cakes because she's gluten free... its SOOOO yummy!

Ours was buttercream. I loved my cake!! Some bakeries will charge extra for fondant (even for those cakes included by the rh)

Most fondants I have seen are easy to pull away from the creamy frostring. It just depends on the look you want for your cake

My cake was all buttercream with the exception of the fondant ribbon. Our bakery told us not to use fondant to cover the cake since it usually doesn't have the best taste (although I actually love fondant lol).

Hi!

I'm a cake designer/decorator and personally I'm not a fan of fondant either. However it does give that smooth effect on your cake and it's great for elaborate designs if you decide to add bling or sugar flowers, etc. There are flavored fondants out there which tastes better than the regular ones so maybe you'll like that. If you decide on buttercream, ask if they offer Swiss or Italian buttercream, it's very light, airy and not too sweet unlike the regular buttercream that is made of Crisco and powdered sugar that most of us are used to. Hope this helps!

I am using fresh whipped cream instead of buttercream - not a fan of the taste of buttercream OR fondant!
