Re: paying for a wedding and buying a house
Sort of in the same boat. My FH and I really want to buy an apt and since he is paying for both (wedding and new apt) I don't think we can afford both. I am in limbo not sure if I am getting a wedding or an apt or neither - bc I know it won't be both.

Re: paying for a wedding and buying a house
I am in the same boat! Loving it & hating it at the same time! We closed on our house in September...FH has been fixing it up on the weekends (major stuff...knocked down a wall, re-sheetrocked, etc). Then we have this wedding in June to pay off. I can't wait to get married & am so excited that we have a house but it is so hard to save money!! Don't worry, you'll get through it...we both will!!

i think it would depend where the apartment was - if it is with them, I could understand your DFs reluctance, but if it is just an apt. then I would totally take them up on it and save the money for a house.

Re: paying for a wedding and buying a house
We are currently saving for an apartment and a the wedding. We have a certain amount we are saving per month for the down payment and have worked out a spreadsheet with all our vendors and what kind of payment plan we will put them on. I can't wait until October to pay thousands of dollars!

Re: paying for a wedding and buying a house
We are in the same boat...We just bought our first home in August & paying for our entire wedding in March...It is definately hard at times, but when you come home & see everything you have accomplished, it is well worth it! You have to be VERY wise with your spending, but I don't mind it!

Re: paying for a wedding and buying a house
we are doing the same and it finally got to the point where I have to just hope everything will fall into place- I just could not deal with stressing over it anymore. I know that we will have no furniture but that is okay-

Re: paying for a wedding and buying a house
We just decided last week that we couldn't swing doing both at the same time. We're going to rent for a year and then buy after the wedding.
But, I feel your stress, my FH was gung ho that was what we were going to do for the longest time.

Re: paying for a wedding and buying a house
I know it is scary, we are just taking it day by day and trying our best. We are moving off LI though, just don't want to pay that kind of money for a house.

I agree with your FH. I wouldn't take the apt either, just too close. I'm sure they are wonderful & all but they would know your every move, especially if they are retired, they have nothing better to do then keep tabs on your life. I don't mean to sound harsh..believe me, I'm in that boat so I'm telling you from experience. On our block its me(DH & our son), next door is my sis(her DH,2 kids), my parents & grandmother next door to her, my aunt & uncle (they have no kids so its like me & sis ARE their kids). It's like having 24 hour security...my sister & I call them all 'Slomin' Shield' They know when someone comes, goes, when ppl are over, etc. All they have to do is look out the window to get an update. My dad use to be really bad, letting himself in(with spare key)..my BIL stopped that short- he has a weird sence of humor, one day he saw my dad was on his way over..letting himself in of course..so my BIL quickly got undressed, draped a towel around himself and acted all normal..my dad was sooo he NEVER opened our doors again without ringing. Thats the downside. But... it has its plusses too.. they all go to Europe half the year so we don't really see them that often. When they are not in Europe, they are in Florida. If I need something, 'moms' grocery store is open 24/7. We have wonderful babysitters and our kids, although very young- enjoy the freedom of going house to house.
Back to the original question..sure it can be done,we did it. It somehow all falls into place. You just have to make it a priority. I know ppl that say 'oh,I can't buy a house, its toooo expensive' these same ppl go on trips frequently, buy themselves 'toys' ie. cars, tech stuff. Don't get me wrong..a little Gucci never hurt anyone. I just know I LOVE having my own home and that was our #1 priority.

Re: paying for a wedding and buying a house
i totally understand what your saying i can't wait to have my own home... i just figured for the first year i can't be that bad.. we'd continue saving for a house the same way we are saving for the wedding and we'd have a very nice down payment(since we don't have to pay rent, or utilities)..its just a temp situation to help us out a bit..that how i'm looking at it...fh is looking at it in the way you just described it ..lol
