I booked my photo early to spread out the cost.. now they want $980 by Sept 5.. kinda stiff for us at the moment.. is this normal? I mean how many times are they seeping money from us.. do we have to pay them at their 'due dates'?

can you explain to them that you'd prefer not to pay the entire amount they are requesting right now - but would be willing to pay a smaller amount. they would probably be willing to work with you on this

I don't understand why they want money from you yet. You have over a year to go. The place I am using had us put down a minimal deposit at booking, next payment due is on our wedding day, and final payment is due when we pick up the pictures. Tell them you feel you have plenty of time and don't feel comfortable leaving any more money now. If they want your business, they will wait.

What does your contract say?
You should talk to them. My DJ tried to do the same thing - last November they asked for $. But contract stated we didn't have to pay til February so they backed off. However, if its stated in your contract you may be stuck but more than likely they'll work with you instead of losing a customer

Were the payment dates in the contract? If not, tell them that you are not comfortable with putting that much money up front over a year in advance and will be happy to put up X amount on that date and make a more realistic payment plan with them. As Boop said, if they want your business, they'll work with you. If they don't work with you on this, that says a lot about their business attitude, and better you should know now.

eww. i just read that part.. i remember 40% due within 2 weeks of contract
40% one month before contract 20% at proofs

There you have it. Maybe you can ask them if they can break it up a little, i.e., reform the contract to allow you to pay 20% now and 20% in 2 months or something.

Seriously, I would just be up front with them. Let them know that you are a little tight right now and would love it if you could split up the payment. Offer them whatever you can give them and then offer another payment date, but I would try, if you can, to make it less than 3 months from the first payment. I imagine that they'd rather have some of your money now and some more later than none of it at all. Tell them something unexpected came up and you would be very much appreciative if they could work with you on this. Can't hurt.
