PC vs. MAC

PC vs. MAC

I have always used a pc, but I am so sick of viruses and am more interested in what can be done with photos that I'm wondering if I should buy a mac next time around.

Does anyone have feelings either way?

It makes no sense IMO to buy a mac and pay close to $1000 more than a PC just to be 'safe from viruses'.

If you are getting viruses on your PC... you are probably doing things or installing things you shouldn't be doing in the first place. You should learn safe computing... and then you won't have to worry about viruses.

As far as photo editing goes... you can get the same photo editing software (Photoshop) for the PC and for the MAC... and they are basically identical.

I'm an art major and I can tell you that you can argue the differences of a PC vs. Mac endlessly. HOWEVER...I do know that MACS are made to handle large file sizes and handle graphic design software and photo editing software a lot better than a pc. Too large files on a pc will crash it....a MAC tends to be better for most professional art programs....hence it is the industry standard for graphic design.

LOVE OUR NEW MAC!! DH wanted a MAC for whatever reason and I'm having a blast using IPhoto for our pictures! I can make them B & W, sepia, resize, drop....whatever

I love my MAC. I find it much easier to work with any sort of accessories (outside drives, printers, cable modems, digital cameras). It's also much easier to install and delete programs. I have had no problems with mine, whereas every PC I've never owned has been buggy in one way or another. Plus the virus thing is a big deal to me, because I get e-mail from my students all the time.

A large file will not crash a PC anymore. Assuming the PC is XP or Win2000 and formatted NTFS... it can handle an infinate file size.

Well not infinite... but I think its around a terrabyte or two.

The Macs are much better for graphic design. I was always a PC person, but FH is in graphic design so our home computer (thanks to his job) is a Mac. I love it now and wouldnt go back to a PC.

DJ PIll is anti-mac for some reason.

I have used both MACs and PCs..

I love my MACs so much better.. I liken the differences between them to a Honda vs. a BMW- they both get you from point A to point B.... but the MAC has a much better ride.

Yes, they are pricey- but IMO it's worth it (and I haven't gotten one virus and to me that's worth the extra $$$).

This is no question!

MAC!

I am a graphic designer, and I am a die hard mac person!

Mac's can handle larger files with ease, it is easy to navigate and find what you are looking for, it is easy to install and delete programs. I have never gotten a virus, ever!

The only thing about mac's is they are expensive.

but if money is not a problem, I say get a MAC!

I am not anti-mac. I have a G5 dual processor in my office along with my tabletPC.

I am just anti anyone that wants a mac for the 'wrong reason' like... they are virus-free or cause they are 'cool'.

Macs have their advantages and if you have a legitimate reason why you need one... then you should go that route.

If you want to piss away close to a grand extra for a mac cause you like the 'cool' factor... then thats your choice.

Oh... and believe it or not... I have gotten just as many viruses on my PC as Sassy gets on her Mac. ZERO!

I personally think they also have a slightly longer useful life than a PC

This i dont agree with. If anything they have the same 'useful life' length.

Since you say that Macs deal with graphics mostly..... the designers that I work with are working with MUCH larger files today than they did say even a few months ago. The files are getting larger and larger... which makes the current macs they have more obsolete quicker.

Let me rephrase.. longer useful life for someone who isn't a graphic designer...
I just got a new mac- before than I had my old iMac for 5 years.. I know my brother is contstantly getting new PCs and stuff b/c of all the damage viruses and crap does

This issue could be argued back and forth all day!

There are die hard Mac fans

It is all personal preferance!

i was just about to say that!
DH is a graphic designer and for some reason, he loves his PC, but a lot of the people he knows in the business prefer the Mac....it's personal preference

ROFL!!!!

This statement is soooooo wrong... I am just laughing. Thats like saying the latest virus that came onto your computer literally took a sledgehammer to it. LOL

If you want to believe that PCs don't have a long life because of 'viruses'.... you are more than welcome.

But in all honesty... you should probably do some more reading about how viruses work... what 'software' damage they cause... and how you prevent them.

A virus has absolutely NO bearing to a PC's 'length of usefullness'. And if your brother is constantly going out and buys a new PC solely because his last one had a virus... well then he is just throwing money away.

Next time he buys a new PC... tell him i'll offer to buy his old 'virus ridden' PC for $50 buks.

But isn't it true that a UNIX-based system will be less prone to viruses? That with such a system you do not have to worry about viruses at all?

Alas.... that is definitely NOT true. UNIX viruses are actually more popular than Mac ones (currently). Ever hear of the KLEZ virus? That has a popular UNIX variant.

There are also other Unix viruses that are very popular. One in particular actually that I can't remember the name. If I think of it... i'll post it here.

Oh... and for you MAC heads that didn't know... OS10 for the MAC is actually a UNIX operating system. Its based off the Unix platform. If you open the Terminal program... you get a unix command prompt and can enter unix commands there. (Don't do this unless you know what you are doing).

I bet most of you here didn't even know that.

I just saying the average person, non-computer guru (obviously DJ Pill knows way a lot about computres- more so than your average person) Macs are a lot more user friendly...

so even though my brother's wasted computers probably can be salvage, my parents aren't very computer literate so the only thing they do is buy new..

Re: PC vs. MAC

I have a Mac. I took a ton of graphic design & copy layout classes & just found it easier for me to be able to do my work at home, rahter than wait for one of the whopping 10 macs on campus to become available....nyhoo, it took a little getting used to at first, becuase it does things differently than on a PC, but I love it now & when I go to work & have to work on a PC (especially an older one) I get a little frustrated, especially when I have to open multiple programs & it slows the whole works down.

DH hates my MAC & only uses it when he absolutely has to. We are looking for a nice notebook Vaio for him....

ETA: If you do decide to go with the MAC, do yourself a big favor & get the Apple Care Protection... it is a couple hundred dollars, but it has saved me over $1500 in repairs and customer care calls.
