PCOS

Hey! Any girls on here with PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome)?
Just need a little insight on what you go through, and how you're doctor has been taking care of you.
I just found out that I have this, and it explains why I'm having a hard time losing weight. I am going for hormone testing tomorrow. We're hoping to start trying to get pregnant in june, and I guess I'm just a little anxious about this now.

I was just diagnosed a few months ago. Feel free to ask me any questions you might have. I know when I first found out I was really overwhelmed.

that's how I feel too! And I'm a nurse, so of course now I am researching it, and freaking about it!!!!!
Did you do hormone testing? If you did, did they figure out where you were having a problem, and how did they fix it?

Yeah I totally freaked too once I read about it lol. It's scary, but it can be managed.

My doctor did a HUGE amount of hormone testing. HUGE. I had to also do a 2 hour glucose & insulin test (different from a regular glucose test). I had so much blood taken that day I don't know how I walked out lol.
My biggest problem seems to be the fact that my insulin levels are very high. To remedy that, my doctor started me on metaformin. It works to correct the problem I'm having with my insulin (my sugar is fine) and it also helps with the weight loss.

I am doing all of that tomorrow, including the 2 hour glucose test.
when you started the metformin, did you begin to loose weight a little easier?

Re: PCOS

I was diagnosed in August, put on Metformin in January. I didn't lose weight really until I started weight watchers. I don't know if the Metformin is doing anything but I'm sticking with it. I was getting persistent abdominal pain and it turned out to be the cysts, and my hormone blood tests came back all wacky too. I've been for multiple sonograms and always have polycystic ovaries. I was actually really unhappy with the treatment I got at my current doctor so I'm switching. If you have any specific questions FM me!

BTW, Metformin is supposed to help your chances when you TTC. Good luck!

I never thought I had it, until I had an ultrasound the other day. My period is VERY late, last period was before valentines day. thought I could be pregnant, and I'm having alot of pelvic pain. So I had an ultrasound, and I have the classic PCOS ultrasound: looks like a string of pearls around my ovaries. So, every month, normal people make a follicle/cyst in which the egg matures. Then the egg ruptures through that cyst, travels down the fallopian tubes, and the you get your period. Lots of hormonal changes going on while that happens. In PCOS, you make WAY too many follicles, none of which take dominance, no egg, so you don't ovulate= don't get a period that month. Somewhere along the lines, your hormones are screwed up, and it can be anything from too much insulin= too much androgen production (testosterone). Everyone is different, which is why hormonal testing is so important.
UGH, I need the answer NOW. I am so frustrated, and so relieved! Does that make sense? This whole time, as I've gained at least 50 pounds in one year I've been so frustrated because I eat very healthy, and I'm active. But still gained weight! and my doctors always blame it on stress!! Now I know why it's been happening. And I want an answer NOW!!! I need to look beautiful in my wedding dress dammit!
So frustrated!!!

If you don't mind, FM me your results. I am so determined to figure this all out!! we should make an official thread, because I'm sure it;s more common than we think!
Doctors are just now starting to recognize all of this, which is frustrating, but also reassuring! I spoke to some of the doctors that I work with yesterday, and I think I enlightened some of them.............. there are so many things that woman come into the ER for that are unexplained, and we send them home with no answers! Maybe if we had better understanding, we could do a better job!

I haven't seen a big difference with the Metaformin yet as I'm still working my way (slowly) to the dosage. But I do notice that I am less hungry (I used to have out of contral hunger pangs). But, I also started eating better before I even started the metaformin. So I was already losing weight (very slowly though).

Re: PCOS

Hi girls!!! I have PCOS and was diagnosed in May of 08 and have been to hell and back in finding a good endo doctor...but found the light!

But what I can say is 1 in every 4 women have PCOS and either know it or dont....! Its very common and your not alone!! There is a wealth of info out there and you should read up on it as well. I believe there is a thread on this as well on the NWR- board!

It is a struggle every day for me and has been! Dont get discouraged!! and stay strong!

I love my doctor and we have monthly checkins and bloodwork and stuff and most importantly we have a plan and it is adjustable... I believe that is very important...

If you have questions please feel free to FM me...
