I am going to start checking out Pediatricians for my little guy, what questions should I ask and what should I look for? Any help would be greatly appreciated

Ask friends & family who they use. Also ask your OBGYN if they have any recommendations.

Re: Peditricians

Stacy - where do you live? I am in the process of interviewing new pediatricians for my son, since the group we've been using (Mineola) is now too far from where we live (St. James). Here's a good start on a pediatrician interview sheet (below). Also, I agree w/Tracy - ask your OB for a recommendation, just to investigate more options. It might be wise to choose a pediatrician that is associated w/the same hospital you will be giving birth at, since you'll want the doctor to examine your child after the birth.

Remember that you'll want to choose someone you are comfortable with, has similar beliefs in how to treat a child's ailments and does not treat you like you don't know anything just b/c you are a first-time parent!

We were lucky - our healthcare system (when I lived in Cali) was set up to make everything easier on the patients - not just the doctors. The main medical building hosted evenings for expectant parents to some and have an informal Q&A with one, two and sometimes three different pediatricians. That's how we chose our son's first doc. And, there was no need to call the doctor ahead of time to say, 'We choose you.' Basically, we told the delivery room nurses who the pediatrician was and they handled the rest.

However, when we moved to NY, we went to a group of pediatricians based on a recommendation from my cousin. I needed someone fast and I trusted my cousin's opinion.

I suppose your first step should be to call each doctor's office and ask if they are A) accepting new patients, and B) if they accept your health insurance. The third question should be: Is it possible for me (and my DH) to meet with the pediatrician for a short interview, prior to my due date? If they say yes, than set it up!

For some useful advice and tips on the interview process, check out BabyCenter. Here's a sample interview sheet:

Re: Peditricians

This is where I am torn I have all my own Dr's by my job (Plainview) Because it is just easier to make appointments during the day, because we live in Shoreham so I would either have to take the day or go in late, etc. Now the baby will be atteneding my Day Care so should I have a peditrican by my job or by my home. I will be going back to work on Jan 5th so the 3 months when I am home I would have to trek out to Nassau, also My hospital is NSUH @ Plainview so I highly doubt a Suffolk Dr. will trek out here. AHHHHH decisions, decisions

Re: Peditricians

Stacey, thats a tough call. I guess you can go either way with WHERE you choose a Dr. for your baby. Maybe you can find a practice with Dr's in Nassau as well as Suffolk.
We go to a great practice that's in Suffolk only. We also didnt have to say 'we choose you' ,lol. They didnt pressure us to fill out any paperwork when we went for the initial interview. But at the hospital, we just had to tell the nurse which ped we decided on.
If you choose a Ped. that's not affiliated w your hospital, a Dr. that's on staff there will check your baby and your ped will see the baby within the first week. So thats not the worst thing in the world, if you were to choose a Dr. thats not affiliated.
Also as far as interviews, if you go to practices, you will most likely get a nurse to answer your questions, unless you ask to speak to a Dr. specifically. Most of them can be asked by a simple phone call to the office (hours, how long is 'call back' time, etc). I think that one question was funny 'what kind of parents do you get along with' What should a Dr. answer to that one?? LOL.
Ask questions that you feel are important to you, and make sure you feel comfortable with the office staff, the environment, location, and of course, hopefully the Dr's come recommended, word of mouth is the best referral.
Since my Dr's were strongly recommended to me, I only had a few questions. I was nervous at first to choose a pediatrician, but there are so many great ones around, you should have no problem. Maybe you can ask your neighbors with kids, who they have been going to. or ask other moms at the daycare, depending where you choose to find a ped.
GOOD LUCK !!

Claud- I cannot wait to hear who you pick since I need a ped too. Maybe your research will help me.

I think this is a tough decision. I also think it is very important for parents to trust their own instincts.

Honestly my nephew's ped (IMO) made his autism diagnosis delayed. He kept telling my SIL that not all 2 years speak (I mean, the little guy didnt even say Mommy, Daddy...nothing but infant babble). He kept reinforcing to my brother and SIL that 'children do things in their own time', which of course is somewhat true, but there are milestones to look for. It also made trying to get my Brother and SIL to hear that something might be wrong even harder because they would say 'The doctor isn't worried so neither are we'. Of course my brother finally listened to my dad when the baby was about 3 and still NOT speaking a word.

Re: Peditricians

Michele that stinks

I tell the parents at my Day Care all the time Dr.'s are human beings and human beings make mistakes, if you feel something is wrong get a second opinion I have a few children at my center that when I was concerned I told the parents right away that I thought they shoud be evaluated and some will say my Dr. isn't concerned. We spend 8 hours a day with these children how long does the Dr.? I have a child in the same boat as your nephew the parents waited to long he is finally getting services at 3 but I wanted him evaluated at 12 months.

I definately know what Dr.'s I DON'T want based on my Day Care experiences Thank you so much for all your input, even thought I have 17 years of experience with children I still have questions when it comes to my own!!! You gals are the best!!!

Re: Peditricians

Stacey, hopefully you get some good recommendations and you find the perfect match in pediatricians =)

I agree that Dr's are humans and we all make mistakes. I am also very big on getting second opinions if need be.

Tangent: EMO5:
One time that thank goodness I was STRONG about what I wanted (and disagreed with a Dr's opinion)was when my dad was in the hospital, he went in with a BAD stomach ache to the ER, they thought it was stones. He was admitted and before they did anything, they did an EKG on his heart, to make sure his heart was OK b4 they did any surgery if need be. One Dr. told me the EKG was slightly abnormal or something to that extent. So I immediately asked this Dr. over the phone, to have my dad transferred to St. Francis Hospital (the Heart Hospital). He said it wasnt cause for concern, to wait for additional results later that week!! I insisted that he be transferred that same day (within hours). After quite some time of telling this Dr that I would feel more comfortable with my father in a Heart Specialist hospital, he finally allowed the transfer. The next day, we found out my dad needed emergency triple bypass surgery!
So I also agree that you have to trust your instincts at times. I think there are many well trained Dr's out there, they are amazing at what they can do, but when your heart tells you something else, go ahead and question it and be strong about it.

Sorry for my tangent.

Re: Peditricians

I am just going to add the same list of thiongs that has been mentioned...
-ask parents in your neighborhood who they use
-ask your OB
- see if they are listed under your insurance as qualified providers
- ask CO WORKERS (thats how mine worked out)

- then call the office, ask if they are accepting new clients and set up a time to interview them

my practice has three doctors.,..I interviewed the MAIN dr and also asked ? of the other drs.

I am very pleased with them

Go by your gut- you will not be 'married' to the dr. If over time you dont feel it is the right fit, go shopping again!

Re: Peditricians

Something else you might want to consider is that they are Board Certified and members of the AAP (Amercian Academy of Pediatrics), which they have to take a test every few years to become recertified in. I guess this means that they are up to date with the most current medical info. Most of the peds that you visit probably are part of AAP.
