Peonies--completely out of season or just expensive?

Peonies--completely out of season or just expensive?

I really wanted peonies for my centerpieces but my florist said they're out of season in July. Does this mean that they are not at all available or that they're just going to be really expensive? He gave me the impression that they were not available at all, but I didn't know if that meant that HE couldn't get them or NO ONE could. Thanks!!!

Some florists won't giv you flowers out of saeson, even fi they COULD get them, because they generally have to be shipped, they've been refrigerated, and they're not as fresh. So you may not want them in your centerpiece because they may tend to wilt. I'd ask the florist for his reason, but I suspect that's the one.

I only had one florist who was willing to get Peonies for me and she explained why I shouldn't get them. When they are in season they're beautiful! When they aren't in season they cost $$$$ and they are very tiny. That large cabbage head look available in April & May isn't around in July, Aug & Sept. The ones she can get are from China and they are very small, about 3' in diam. she said.

I hope it helps! I woud love to have them too...

When I went to visit my florist, I had initially wanted all pink peonies. When the florist asked what I wanted and I told them, they said 'ahhh, you have very very good taste'.. meaning they were way over my budget, and I thought I had a very nice budget. Would your florist even give you a quote?

Thanks for the information ladies. My florist didn't even give me a quote, so I guess that means he can't get them at all. It sounds like it's better that way anyway since I want them to look like the ones on the Preston Bailey book and I'd be so sad if they came in looking all scrawny and what not. Guess I'll stick with roses and hydrangea!
