So my FH and I are meeting with the DJ we are booking tonight and one of the other DJ's we met with brought up the idea of having a percussionist play along with the music. I have seen people have them before in pictures but have never experienced one in person.
Please share any experiences, go or bad, that you have had or friends might have had with this.
Is it worth the extra money?

my sister used a percussionist w/ her DJ at her wedding, IMO it wasn't worth the extra expense

i think its totally worth the money. i dont like bands, i prefer a dj but the percussionist gives you some 'live' entertainment. i think they enhance the dj's music and help hype up the party. i love when weddings have them. needless to say, we booked one lol

ITA with jackie, and in fact, we have the same DJ booked, LI Sound if im not mistaken, right jack??
and we booked one of their percussionists....they are AMAZING bring a totally different element to the party, especially if you're not having a band but want some sort of live music. It completely pumps up everyone, and the mood, and everything! and also, our percussionist is SO into it, that its so much fun to watch him go!! and then he lets the bride and groom play the drums!!! :)
we're going to another showcase at our DJs studio tomorrow night even tho we already booked cuz we wanna watch our percussionist in action again!!

We have the percussionist on the 'Wait and see how much $$$ is left' list. So, it's in our contract as a maybe so we locked in 2008 prices.. whoo.

Glad to know were not the only ones that have this particular list LoL... I would love to be able to do something like this so we'll have to see if we have the cash at the end...

We're not having one, I think it's a nice touch but I was never a fan of drum solo-type extended endings to songs and stuff and that's kind of what I saw on the video a DJ showed me. We considered it but it's not worth the expense to me.
* Edited because what I said didn't make sense, lol

personally, i like how a percussionist sounds. it gives off a fun vibe..i too am considering it. however, you must take into consideration that its usually played during upbeat music. therefore, it won't be played throughout the night (since you'd have other genres..slow dance, etc.) so you need to decide if its worth spending the money on for the amount of time its being used. hope this makes sense :)

us too, i would loveee to have one, but dont know if we can afford it right now
I really wanted one, I thought it was cool, but FH doesn't like it. He thinks that its a bit over the top and that the drums may ruin some of the songs and make it not sound like the song...

Re: Percussionist w/ the DJ ... Thoughts?
how big is your room and what kind of shape is it.? Sometimes if it's a small room then the drummer actually overpowers the DJ and it doesn't sound good.
I DEF think it adds something but it doesn't make or break a reception.
