Personal Q - Birth Control

Original post by marymoon

Hey, I've got a personal Q, FM if necessary... I'm just curious about what people's experiences ahve been with various forms of birth control. Now that FH is going to have his own apt (and we'll actually see each other - we were LD when he was away at school) I was thinking it might be wise to go on the pill. He's got no imput, he says it's my body and he's pretty comfortable with the mix of methods we've got going now, but I think if we're going to be together more often, I'll feel a lot better being on the pill. I guess he doens't understand the panic I feel about getting preggers, it's not his body. I'm just concerned about the pill. I'm afraid I'll gain weight or get sick, etc. None of my close friends are on it, so...

Anyway, thanks...it's been on my mind, and I know you ladies will help me out!

I've been on the generic version of desogen (apri) for about 6 years and LOVE it... for the first 4 weeks I did get nauseous the first few days of each cycle, but I didn't gain any weight... my doctor gave me a sample of levoran or something like that, so I tried it, and it made me feel psychotic! I couldn't control my emotions... after 3 weeks my FH begged me to do something, so I went back to Apri and feel great again... my only warning is everyone has different reactions... it might work great for you the first time, or you might have to try a variety of pills before you find the right one

Currently I'm on Aviane (generic version of Alesse)- no problems. I've been on it for a few years now. Before that I tried Ortho Tri-Cyclen and Nordette- each for at least a year. Neither were right for me.

Birth Control pills can be great when you find the right one. It may take a few tries to get the right one for you, and if it does, that's completely normal. For example, Ortho Tri made me pyscho, but other people swear by it. By the same token, I have no problems with Alesse, but other people do. You have to find what works for you.

Good luck!

I started on Ortho Tri Cyclin and I had no problems at all with it. Then I switched to Mircette and again had no probs with it, I used the generic of mircette and did not like it, I was breaking out like crazy all of a sudden, so I went back to Mircette and everything went back to normal...I am very happy with it!!

My sister went on the patch recently and she loves it but she finds her periods were lighter while she was on the pill.

I can vouch for that!! But the upside is I only need to REMEMBER 1 time week about it!! I have such an irregular working schedule, so I always found the pill to be a pain because i rarely took it at the same time..... so I LOVE the patch!!

I could not take the pill for anything- it made my BP go up. So this did not offer many options for us. We were using condoms and spermicide, and it always worked for us. Now we are trying to start a family, so we are not using anything. It is weird you are careful for so long and then you use nothing!

Definitely speak to your doctor, I'm going to be the minority it sounds like here but I was on Ortho Tri-Cyclen and had HORRIBLE side effects, everything from heart palpitations, nausea to melasma on my face after being in the sun for two hours that lasted for nearly a year after I stopped the pill!!!It was soooo horrible and yes, the doctor told me it was due to the pill. Some of these pills can cause serious side effects and long-lasting effects, I was VERY upset about the brown spots all over my face , I mean they were BAD!!! I went off the pill and over a year they faded with the help of EVERYTHING known to mankind that I used to help them go away. My adivce, talk to your doctor, see what works for you...the pill is NOT for everyone!!!

I am so scared to go on it because my girlfriend just nearly escaped with her life, because she got a blood clot from the pill. don't mean to scare anyone----but after what i am seeing her go through--it's a lesson to be learned--if you feel anything weird in your legs go to the DR! she felt it the day before her wedding, figured it was a pulled muscle or something and went on with the wedding (good thing because the dr. told her after that she wouldn't have been able to get married) and a two week Greek honeymoon, where she nearly collapsed from the pain and the swelling. she came home and was put in the hospital right away---not fun. her dr. told her ''oh, don't worry there is less than 1% chance of blood clots forming!' so everyone , just be careful, PLEASE!

The seasonal BC is no good for you. I work in a pharmacy and the pharmacist is very against that and the shot, since you don;t get your period.. you should have a period... JMO..but i haven;t heard anything good about it.'
