Hey, I've got a personal Q, FM if necessary... I'm just curious about what people's experiences ahve been with various forms of birth control. Now that FH is going to have his own apt (and we'll actually see each other - we were LD when he was away at school) I was thinking it might be wise to go on the pill. He's got no imput, he says it's my body and he's pretty comfortable with the mix of methods we've got going now, but I think if we're going to be together more often, I'll feel a lot better being on the pill. I guess he doens't understand the panic I feel about getting preggers, it's not his body. I'm just concerned about the pill. I'm afraid I'll gain weight or get sick, etc. None of my close friends are on it, so...
Anyway, thanks...it's been on my mind, and I know you ladies will help me out!

Re: Personal Q - Birth Control
I have been on the pill since December 2001. I started on OrthoTriCyclen, which I loved - I was like the poster child for that pill. I then went to Trivora (for Health Insurance reasons), which I hated and switched again after 6 months of hell. Totally changed my personality and my sex drive went down the tubes. I'm now on TriSprintec, which is the generic form of OrthoTriCyclen, and I'm loving it. I am back to my old self again.
I have never gained weight on any of these pills - I've actually lost weight. And I've never gotten sick on them either. I think that all depends on what time you take it - I take it at night with dinner so that there is something in my stomach. I always have problems taking pills first thing in the morning since it always upsets my stomach.

Re: Personal Q - Birth Control
I started on Orthotricyclen in 1999 and now I'm on the generic, trisprintec. I've had no problems, aside from occasional nausea, which I haven't experienced in a couple of years now.

I am on Loestrin which is a low dose birth control. I've been on it for years. I'm very happy with it!

I have used Ortho-tri-cyclen for over 8 years now. Never had a problem--They now offer a lower dose of the same pill. You should talk to your doctor about it, but BC pills sounds like a great option for you.
Never had a problem with weight gain either.

Re: Personal Q - Birth Control
I went on the pill for the first time after I got married and I gained 10lbs. I hated it and went off after a year. Sure enough, the weight came right off. Now, we just try to be careful but if it happens, it happens.

Re: Personal Q - Birth Control
I was on Ortho Tri Cyclen for about 5 years and just recently switched ti Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo. I was having mood swings during the first week of pills on the higher dosage so that is why I switched to lo. I hvae no other problems.

Re: Personal Q - Birth Control
I have been on the pill since I was 17, I started with Desogen and then my DR said I could use the generic version since it would be the samething pretty much but cheaper. It's called Apri and it's great, I've never experienced any side effects and with insurance it's only 10 bucks! Good Luck!

Re: Personal Q - Birth Control
When I first went on the pill in 1997 (I have been on and off since) I was put on Orth Novum (this is a tri-phasic, like OrthoTriCyclen...meaning it has 3 different levels of hormones one each week before your placebos).... oh horrible... such severe reactions, daily migraines w/ vomitting, break outs, mood swings, you name it. I tried to switch to a lower dose; but that didn't work either. So I went off completely.
Then I developed some uterine problems that made my periods unbearable, I mean passing out unbearable. So my doc put me on a bi-phasic (2 levels of hormones) called Levlen28 and I love this pill.... my periods are lighter, my skin is clearer, I have put on a little weight but I think it is more from quitting smoking recently.
** Which by the way, if you do smoke... the pill or any synthetic hormone is NOT for you. No one needs a pulmonary embolism!!**
My sister went on the patch recently and she loves it but she finds her periods were lighter while she was on the pill.
Bottom line, talk to your doc about it first.
Wow this turned out to be a book.

Re: Personal Q - Birth Control
I decided to go for an IUD. I've had it for like 5 years now (they last about 7-10). I don't have a problem in the world. Best of all I don't have to remember to take anything or weird out my hormones, which always bugged me out anyway. Changing the chemical balance in my body is too scary to me.
You might want to talk to your GYN about it as an option.
When FI and I moved in together 4 years ago thats when I went on the pill too. I have been on all different types because my hormones were 'too strong' for the low dosed pills. At first I was nauseous and sickly feeling, but it only lasted at most 3 weeks. Not I am on Ortho Tri Cyclen (TriSpentec - sp?) and feel fine and have for years. I did gain weight but it might have just been coincidence with my life changes... age, desk job, etc.
IMO the pill is a wonderful sense of security that no decisions or scares can occur and also my doctor said it lowers the chances of ovarian cancer.

I'm another Othro-tri-cyclen girl. Love it!! My doctor had me switch to the Lo when it came out and I did it for six months. I became an uncontrollable b!tch with it so I switched back. Years ago I was on TriNorinol. I think I gained a couple of pounds on that but I definitely didn't on Ortho. Usually, even if you do, it's only about 5 lbs and it lasts for the first few months while your body's getting used to it and then you go back to your normal weight.

Another Othotricyclen - I have been on it for about 3 years and have no problems...I am now on the generic and that is working out fine too.
I do have some friends that hated the ortho-tricylcen it made them very emotional - but I had no problems - You have to keep trying until you find one that is best for you

Re: Personal Q - Birth Control
I am an OrthoCypt..(same family as Orthotricyclen, just the first version).
Been on it since 1993
No problems.
Im shocked how many women aren't using the pill. I use it to at least control my periods and such. I love having only a 2 and half day cycle and being able to plan it.

Re: Personal Q - Birth Control
I was on Ortho Tricyclen for years and have been using the patch (Ortho Evra) for about three years now. I have not had any problems, no mood swings or weight gain (at least not from the BC), but I never had PMS in my life so I think it might be related. Talk to your Gyno, he or she will have the best advice.
I have low estrogen so none stopped the spotting, but I did not gain weight, have mood swings or feel naseaus. I did find it kills teh desire on some of them.
