For those of you who have met me, do you think I displayed anxiety or shyness? I got some feedback today from a professor regarding an interview I went on that really upset me.
I want honest opinions please. Thanks.

Re: Personal question
I don't think so. When I met you at the WOTY I thought you were friendly, well spoken but quiet. IMO you are more of an observer than a blabber mouth and that is not a bad thing by any means.
Hope that helps.
Besides you have a very warm welcoming smile!

Re: Personal question
No to both.
That surprises me. I found you to be very relaxed and pleasant. In fact, I am usually VERY shy (which was why our small Queens GTG was perfect for my first one- I knew I would feel more comfortable) but you ladies all put me at ease. I didn't think you seemed anxious or shy at all. But then again, an interview can be SO nerve wracking.

Re: Personal question
First of all Jackie I'm sorry you are upset about your interview
Secondly, I wouldn't say you are shy at all - actually I found you to be very friendly, talkative, engaging, funny and overall cool. We met at the 1st official 'classless GTG' and you jumped right into the madness and totally held your own with the likes of that crazy bunch !! You took time to chat with everyone there, no small task since it was LOUD at Sutton Place and we were a larger group
So I can honestly say that I don't find you to be shy, 'quiet' and definitely NOT anxious at all based on my meeting you ... but as Tracy said, interviews are an entirely different environment and the nerves and anxiety involved can really do a number on ANYONE
Again, I'm sorry to hear this is bothering you so!

Re: Personal question
No way. You're bubbly and friendly, and just plain adorable!
Now, maybe the minor nervousness coupled with your natural bubbly personality came across as anxiety?
I think you're an excellent candidate for any job you go for. You'll get something. I know you will.
You know how to get a hold of me if you need an ear.

Re: Personal question
I only met you once, and we we didn't get to talking tooo much....but I found you to be a lot like myself, actually. A quiet observer......who notices all that is going on, but doesnt' necessarily have to say everything that comes into her head. I thought you could be shy.....but i didn't think it was a bad shyness that would be overwhelming and akward in social situations.....a normal shyness....a reserved quality where you keep quiet until getting to know people better.
now i'm blabbering - sorry!

I think that's a pretty accurate description of me, especially in a big group where I had never met anyone!
Thanks to all of you for your feedback..I really appreciate it. I was starting to have some major self-doubts.
When I got to school today, one of my professors called me into his office. I have a very good relationship with him and he wrote me a wonderful letter of reccommendation for internship.
Apparently, after my interview in Valhalla last week, the director of training called him and basically said that my GPA, credentials, letters of rec were all good, but my 'social anxiety' (as my prof put it) gets in the way. I never thought I had social anxiety! I do get anxious during interviews, but I think I probably display behaviors that may be construed as anxiety. I know I fidget and talk too fast, at the least. I'm just really wondering how I'm perceived by others! My professor basically said that this is something that he has seen in me before. This would have been nice to know earlier in my training!

As someone that has met you on more than one occasion, I would have to say defintely NO. You were very friendly and talkative.

Re: Personal question
As soon as I read your question, I thought that you must talk too quickly!! I find that psychologists hate this because they think you are nervous or too valley girlish. They commented about one of my friends who is like this once. When I applied to schools, one of my college professors advised me to talk slowly so not to appear young (you know what I mean?). Interestingly, I once had a patient who thought I was nervous with her. The only thing I could think of was that my tendency to be hyper was viewed as anxiety.
My advice is to SLOW DOWN and don't appear hyper.

People shouldn't judge you on meeting you in an interview about your 'quiet' personality. I know that I'm very tense and quiet when I went on interviews. That's really not how I am in person.

Re: Personal question
First of all I think you're wonderful.
I think maybe a little on the shy/quiet /reserved side..but not at ALL socially awkward. Not even a little bit. I found that you were really easy to talk to. I met you at WOTY and there were SO many people there, and it's hard to run around and be bubbly to everyone you don't know (unless you're kimberlybride)... But I defintiely didn't think you have social anxiety, at all.

Re: Personal question
Jackie, when I was in grad school there was some kind of 'interview coaching' available where you did simulated interviews and got feedback. Is something similar available through your school's career center? Interviewing's like most other things- with practice you get more comfortable and skilled. I know I went on SO many interviews for teaching jobs and the difference between those initial ones and the later ones was substantial.

I don't know of anything like that, but I will look into it. Thanks.
