Unfortunately, our answer yesterday would have been about 5 times more than it is today.

Re: Personal Question Regarding Income...

I totally agree with you! I bought myself a condo last year...before I met FH. I was making by myself...a very healthy salary for a single person (29 at the time). More than my parents make...together! Anyway...I was completely at a loss...I was like...what does everyone else do that they can afford $500,000 and up for a house? Even the houses in my price range (250K) needed so much work...what was I to do? I decided to narrow my search...and I bought a condo. And...it wasn't cheap...I paid 255K for it. It's crazy...I have no idea how we are going to move from this condo and buy a regular house in a few years!!!

Its really crazy. We have friends that live in houses that are 3x the price of ours and we are like what the heck. Are they making 3x our income. I don't know

I guess you really need 500k plus.

There was a poll before about how much you need to live on long island and people were saying you need about a 100k but I don't see how.

I just can't imagine living in long island and making that. I think you need more.

Nevermind that I wanna know who the ones in 200,000 + range are and more importantly when they are buying me lunch.

Housing on LI s*cks... FH and I are looking PA because LI is just so outrageous right now.

I want to know how everyone affords to live in a house on LI also- tips anyone?

$100,000 to live in a house on LI, NO WAY. The property tax alone will get you

Re: Personal Question Regarding Income...

This is so hard for us. I want to be able to buy a house in LI in an area that I grew up in too but with the prices, there is no way. We live in NJ now and DH's dad is a home builder here. If we stay in NJ, we can get a brand new house (if we find a piece of land) built at cost. It makes more sense for us to do that but I just can't see spending so much of my life in NJ. It's one of our biggest debates. Have a great house in NJ or have an much smaller house in LI.

Although alot of people think that NJ is cheap. I think some parts are CHEAPER than Long Island but alot of the nicer areas are very equivalent to LI prices.

I soooooooooooo want to stay on LI, but just don't know if it will be financially feasable at this point.
Dh didn't grow up here, so he doesn't care if he stays, in fact, he's not so fond of how over populated LI has become...

Trust me when I say that any town in Jersey that is really nice is going to rival LI's prices BIG TIME!!!! I know....I live there....
350K is lowballing a 2 to 3 bdrm. cape in the areas we have been looking at...

I think people have misconceptions about Jersey being cheaper....JMO

My parent's live in Jersey, I know how much it costs, I just think in the Long run in the grand scheme of things I get a bigger bang for my buck..........

Re: Personal Question Regarding Income...

Another thing to consider is whether or not you are going to be a SAHM. If so, obviously you'll lose an income. We originally wanted to try to save to put down enough on our home so we could live on DH's income but we crunched the numbers and realized we probably would have met our 10 year anniversary in an apartment. It just would have taken forever to save that much so we bit the bullet and we are now homeowners who need my salary. We're seriously considering moving out of state when we have children so we don't have to sacrifice so severely on our quality of life.

Just one more thing to think about, as if there's not enough already!

Re: Personal Question Regarding Income...

The commute is cheaper from Jersey (certain parts) than it from LI lol go figure..

YOu also have to calculate debt to income ratios.. I know people that make a fortune a year and yet are strapped, bc they live above their means and are in soo much debt..

it's not always how much you make, but how you spend it..
