Not trying to start any drama, but would just like an explanation of why it is so bad to buy a dog from a pet store. I always thought they were just up for adoption, just like NSAL... What gives?

Well, to me spending hundreds of dollars at a pet store (which many cost) is just wrong when there are so many at shelters being put to sleep. Many are bred in puppy mills with horrible conditions. Others who actually have puppies can shed more light on this, but IMO unless you are buying a pure bred to show (which you would probably buy through a breeder and not a store anyway), I don't know why anyone wouldn't save an animal from being put to sleep.

Ahhh, well said! I got my two kitties from NSAL, even though they don't put them to sleep there. I agree and always thought about why someone would spend money on a dog, when you can save one, but to each their own, ya know? I just wondered why there was always such a huge debate on that. A friend of mine just paid up the a@s for a mut at Shake-A-Paw and I wondered why she didn't go to a shelter...

Also, the dogs from pet stores are from puppy mills, and for the most part are not as pure bred as they claim to be. In addition, there is a higher chance of medical problems and charachteristics that are not typical of the breed.
I cant go into detail becuase its too early in the morning for my blood to boil but do a google search on puppy mills and pet shop dogs... you will see.
The parents and puppies are mistreated and inbred and sickly, just for starters...

Re: Pet Shop Puppies
ooooh i will not go on and on... but pet shop puppies come from puppymills (you should DEF read up on them, its horrible) they are mistreated and in poor, unhealthy conditions. Especially the parents. The breeding parents are locked up in cages and only let out to be bred. They sit in their own filth and do not get proper health care. they will breed the smallest dogs to the smallest dogs and tell you they are 'teacup' when truly they are just the sickest one they have.
They are usually not completely purebred.. somewhere down the line.
pet shops will tellyou they are a 'breeder haven' and do not get from puppymills. This is untrue. sometimes even 'breeders' are puppymills.
Pet Shppsuse the term 'Teacup' which doesnt exist.
Pet shops raise the price on the dog like 80%.
Pet Shops sell mutts and charge like $1000 by calling them a fancy designer name like 'Labradoodle, Puggle, Maltipoo, etc' (if you do want a mixed bred like these you can DEF find them cheaper, people are always breeding them for half the price)
i could go on and on. Youre best bet is just to read about puppymills. You'll be appauled enough to never go to a pet hsop.
ill try to find some links later.

'The latest money-making trend is the promotion of mixed breeds with official-looking 'registration papers' and catchy-sounding names. The 'registrations' come from a burgeoning industry of registry services, each willing to issue documents at the drop of a few ten dollar bills. Best known of these is the US Kennel Club that advertises that they register 'rare breeds, hybrids, even pet class.' Other 'clubs' have appeared that will produce official-looking 'Championship' papers if you send them a photo or video of any dog.'

Re: Pet Shop Puppies
Hubby got Angel from Puppy Depot and bless her little heart, she was as close to death as a dog could be. He paid $900.00 for her (he didn't know about Puppy Mills or anything like that). The day after we got her, I marched in there (it was a Saturday) and FLIPPED in the middle of the store. Mind you, the place was packed and I made a huge stink about how they are ripping people off by selling sick animals. They offered to take her back and exchange her for a healthy one. I asked the guy if he had put crack in his coffee because there was NO WAY they were getting her back. If they couldn't do an adequate enough job of caring for her before I got her, I wasn't going to condemn her to death by giving her back. To this day, we still have quarterly health issues with her; she's undersized, etc.
Sprinkles we bought from a reputable local pet shop in Patchogue that does obtain their doggies from breeders. Of course there is some markup but nothing like what some of these places charge. I think we paid $600.00 for her which is what we paid for Gizzy back in 1997 from a breeder. If you don't have a specific breed in mind, there are tons of nearly free resources in order to adopt a pet. We've given more than 20 street cats a home over the past 20 years. It's very hard to come across a Boston on Petfinder.Org. And I don't have an appreciation for bigger dogs (doesn't mean I don't love them ).
Puppy mills make me sick and I regularly support PETA and their anti-cruelty efforts.

I feel the same. I would never buy a dog or cat from a pet shop. THey can have so many medical problems. They come from horrible and unsanitary puppy mills. If you want a pure breed dog, do a search on petfinders. there are so many rescues that you can adopt from. Or do your homework and get one from a reputable breeder. One who knows how to breed dogs and cats the proper way.
There are so many unwanted dogs and cats in shelters waiting to be adopted into a good home. Adopt or rescue one from your local group or shelters.

Re: Pet Shop Puppies
also, please spay and neuter your pet. If you feed the feral cats in your neighborhood, rent a cat trap from your local shelter(you get the money back when the trap is returned) and get the cat(s) fixed to prevent them from breeding unwanted kittens.
The ASPCA offers free/low cost fixing.
Read more about trap neuter return by clicking here
In addition, the Humane Society in Manhattan offers free spaying for feral cats.

What about the kitties that are in petshops, like Petco, who are placed there by adoption agencies? I've never gotten one - but wouldn't that be the same as adopting at a shelter?

yes, totally! thats the same as adopting from a shelter.
actually though... you know how some pet shops sell kittens? not purebreds.. just ones people bring in... those arent from kittymills or anythign like that. so i wouldnt go as far to say thats so wrong. i mean, you can totally adopt one and save a life... but its different when it comes to dogs. hugely different.

Re: Pet Shop Puppies
FH used to work for the ASPCA and he had to stop because of all the abuse he saw (especially at puppy mills).
They did a raid on a guy who was breeding beagles. There was this one in the back who was too old to breed anymore. She lived outside, only ate stale bagels and had numerous (and expensive) medical problems. FH ended up adopting her and she lived for him until she died when she was about 18 years old. She was the sweetest animal you could find despite the hardships she had to deal with. When she would sleep, she would dream and her legs would move like she was trying to run and she would whimper. I can only wonder if she was dreaming about her time as a puppy mill mother.
Unfortunately, the guy at the puppy mill went to court, and was slapped on the wrist -- small fine and they even gave him some of the dogs back. Not too long later, he was back in business.

Yes!!! The cats at petco(in Long island) are from the Valley Stream Animal shelter. Petland in the city hosts nsal, animal haven and other shelters.
Petco also has Greyhound rescues use their space for awareness on the breed and how to rescue one.
