I used to work for an airline...but that was 7 years ago (YIKES...getting old...can't believe that was so long ago)
and after new security procedures...I thought i'd ask you guys...
what are the restrictions for pets IN CABIN? cats or dogs? is there a weight/size limit?
anyone put their animal in cargo? how safe would that be in April? while I put animals in cargo (at least I entered them in the computer) I never paid attention to them at the other end...but I never heard anything bad either..
what are your opinions?

Re: Pets on airplanes...
I can find out more details for you as my FI works for TSA (the baggage screeners in the airport)
As for what I do know (which I'll double check it with him) some flights only allow 1 or 2 pets on the entire flight. This also has to be booked months in advanced.
They are to be in there carry thing and I think you can take them with you in the cabin
I will double check this with FI tonight when he gets home. (he gets home at 11:30)
thanks...I guess I should find a ticket...and call the airline!!

Re: Pets on airplanes...
I am using an airline next week that doesnt allow dogs. I was going to use another airline because I wanted to travel with my dog and most allow you to bring two dogs per flight. I think there is a weight restriction of under 12 pounds or something. I am not sure what the weight is. Personally I dont like the idea of an animal in cargo. I heard some really horrific stories.

Re: Pets on airplanes...
We took our dog to San Francisco over x-mas and the weight limit was 15 pounds to fly in cabin. Since our pup is not bigger it was not an issue but I would check with the airlines because every one had different regulations. Also, there was a $75/each way fee to bring her. She had to fit underneath the seat in front and we took her in a Sherpa bag. Good luck!

Re: Pets on airplanes...
Does anyone listen to Z100 in the morning?
'MY CAT IS GOING!@@$$@^!^!'
(If you didn't hear it, you probably have no idea what I am talking about and you are probably not laughing...Everytime they do the greatest moments, I get hysterical...)
Anyways, I work at JFK and I bring in dogs for this store------------------------------------->
They bring in every week, and luckily I have never had an experience with sick dogs. The airlines that we use are only Delta and Uzbekistan AirWays, and they transport a very high volume of animals through baggage and cargo.
(800) 221-1212 Delta
$75.00 surcharge each way~ Delta is the only airline I am familiar with as far as carry on pets, and they state that each flight may only have two pets per cabin. So if you have two dogs and you want to bring them both on the plane, and the guy across from you booked yesterday with one cat, you have to check one of your dogs in as cargo and you will get him once you get to your destination. SO book as far in advance as you can, however I remember them telling me that it's not a daily occurrance of having a pet on board, so don't be afraid to ask. I would rather miss the flight than stick my Luigi. Maxie or Elmo Baby in cargo, but that is just me... but the Cargo handlers are really nice about having the animals down there in temp control, and I think it's more of the idea that scares me than the actual transporting.
I hope this info helped alittle!

Oh...I couldnt put my little one in cargo.
I do know that Jetblue allows you to bring the animal in the cabin, at least that is what they told me when I called to inquire.

Re: Pets on airplanes...
Ok I got the official word from the TSA guy himself
Each airline is different. This is something you have to talk to the airlines about. Definatly call them months in advance because flights are only allowed so many pets on a flight and some airlines dont allow animals at all.
Each airline has its own regulations on pets (height, weight, type of animal)
Delta is good for traveling with pets. They have no problems but highly suggest you book way in advance.
Your pet sits with you on the flight. He sits on your lap.
Some airlines even provide a pet carrier for your animal. It provides you with the box and the airholes for your pet. (Lufthunsa definatly provides you with the pet carrier)
Your ticket will also be marked with a note stating you are traveling with a pet.
BUT!! I think my little pooch is too big for the cabin...he is too tall...he's 22 inc...max is 19
so my question is...has anyone ever put their animal in cargo? Delta says its temperature controlled...I have a big kennel for him...that I could load with blankets...and I made sure it was a direct flight...
what do you guys think...try to get him to look smaller or cargo? or put my cat in his place - in cabin?

Re: Pets on airplanes...
I say try to get him in the cabin. I flew Delta to Florida a few years back and brought my dog. They didnt even look to see if I paid for her to be on the flight with me. They didnt look into anthing as far as the dog. I dont know how it is now. If he is a little over in weight I would say that you may get by.

Re: Pets on airplanes...
I'm serious, Delta is very nice to the animals. I deal with them almost every Friday, and it's a routine for them. They are very cautious because they could have a lawsuit on their hands if anything happens to your pet. The dog is a passenger, and just as they watch out for you, they watch out for the pets. My dogs three dogs are 6 lbs and under, so I would never have to stick them in as cargo, but Delta is really nice about it. The idea of doing it is worse than what they are actually going through.

Re: Pets on airplanes...
Many of the airlines also do NOT allow you to fly with your pet when its placed in cargo due to the weather conditions. I.E. when my entire family flew to Ecuador one year, he was placed in cargo during our winter months. We went for the holidays. That was okay. But when my mom wanted to take our dog with her back to Ecuador in May they said NO. Because of the fact that its hot in NY and hot in Ecuador. Cargo area gets really hot even before the plane takes off. There is no air circulation down there if any, and the cage is in with the luggage literally. Our pooch hated it! I know for this international flight he wasn't allowed in the cabin area and he was a miniature poodle.
If your dog can fit in one of those travelling pet bags, and can fit under the seat in front of you, then you shouldn't have a problem. Explain this to the airline. The bags are better then the crates if you want to try to get him in the cabin area. Unless he is a big dog...
