Phone Companies

Who is everyone using for home and cell? We use Verizon for both and I cant believe phones are our highest utility bill. We are paying about $140/mo for one line in the house and 2 cell phones. We have to be able to do better than this. Any suggestions?

Re: Phone Companies

Our home line (Verizon)...which to me is a waste...is $72 a month...our cell phones (Cingular) together are $90.

WE pay WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY too much if you ask me and we just changed cell phone companies...we had Nextel and were paying double what we are now!!

Re: Phone Companies

Fran, I just switched to Verizon for our home phone so that we can have one bill with our cell phones. I am expecting everything to be $150/month. I hate it when they get you with the packages of 'unlimimited' calls. I want to pay for what I use, not for what I don't use. My options were $44.95/month with unlimited local/regional calls and long distance is $.5/minute plus taxes and surgcharges, which is more like $65/month. Otherwise I can spend $20 just for the phone line and taxes, and $.9 per local call, and $3/month for 30 min of LD and $.10 for each additional minute. I would prefer to pay for the 2nd option, but that would mean we have to limit our LD calls to night and weekends.

What package do you have?

They always get you no matter what company it is!

Re: Phone Companies

Niha...I like that second option that you have!! We do not make that many calls and I get free nights and weekends on my cell phone!!

I think I will sign up for that!!

Re: Phone Companies

I just switched to the $59.95 - which will be about $70 with taxes unlimited local and long distance. Almost all of Johns family is out of state. I am in the 'process' (long story) of switching our cell phones to what ever they call their nationwide plan with free Verizon to Verizon, nights/weekends and 400 minutes.- wich will also be about $70.00. We are supposed to get a big $5.00 discount for combining the two. I hope to then be able to drop the long distance from our home phone and save something. **They almost got me on on a wireless Palm Pilot and service - but I resisted.

Wasn't it simpler before cell phones and wireless this and that? I used to get along just fine without all these gadgets.

Re: Phone Companies

I love the Verizon unlimited local and long distance. We make so many long distance calls that they are practically paying us to make phone calls.

Re: Phone Companies

It was easier 'back then' wasn't it!

Fran, the thing is that I don't think you can really drop the LD service if you have keep any of their true packages. They only have the $20 for the line, plus pay for whatever you use after that (.10/min for LD and local calls .9/call).

I guess my other option is to have a line, but then use a calling card from BJs for LD that is not during nights and weekends.

Re: Phone Companies

We use AS&S (known to others as, AT&T) for home & 2 cells - though FHs cell is paid for by work. The phone industry is a huge rip-off...it's right up there with the wedding industry, imo. Ugh, when will it be regulated?? Investigated?? We need to pay for 3 different services just to use the home phone. R_I_P_O_F_F_!!!

Re: Phone Companies

We now have Verizon for everything. We have 2 separate phone lines. One is our main house line. The other is our DSL line which right now is hooked up to 5 computers(this house is techno city), our fax machine and also is my son's phone. We also have Verizon for our cell phones. Previously we had AT&T for long distance and I had AT&T for my cell phone. We dropped AT&T completely. DH and I switched to Verizon's family plan for our cell phones and we changed our phone service on our main line to Verizon's Freedom plan. We made a bunch of other changes as well and ended up saving a little over $70.00 per month. Well worth it!!
