Phone Company?

Phone Company?

What phone company do you use? I use Verizon, and my bill always comes out to around $70 meanwhile I have a $35 local package and pay 5 cents a minute for long distance because we don't use the long distance that much.

I was thinking of switching to MCI because they offer a 29.99 local package that includes 200 mins. free for long distance, after it being 5 cents a minute.

What phone company do you use, how much does your bill come out to around, and what do you get for it? I'm afraid if I get MCI, and it turns out being more if they charge more for different things or something. I really need to save some money.

We have Verizon but it's an unlimited local/long distance package. We pay about $50 a month ( we're in FL) I think it's $60 in NY
We had sprint b4 with a 1000 minutes a month in long distance, you'd b suprised how easy it was to go over that!! So we had two bills one for local and LD and it ws costing us 80 bucks months so we switched to Verizon.
It works great for us.

Hey violet... I posted something about this very same thing on NWR.. We're going to get Optimum's phone plan.. it sounds like the best one out there right now..

Optimum? I'll look into that.

I think the MCI so far is better because it's $29.99 for all local and then some long distance. I made sure that they don't charge any fees for just starting the service like installation fees, and they don't charge for two months' worth when you start like Verizon did.

Let me warn everyone about MCI - I signed on with them because I fell like a fool for their $29.99 advertised special for 'local' calls - well, they consider local only the area code you live in - so for a new Suffolk girl with city friends, all my 212 and 718 calls are LONG DISTANCE! Arrgh!
Even 516 is long distance!

If you use Optimum on line I think they now offer a local service, without all the taxes, etc,. that phone companies charge.

We are going to switch to AT&T (we don't use Optimum's cable, we are still dial-up).

Re: Phone Company?

Really? I'll call up and ask about that. I just signed on with them, but I'll make sure. See, with Verizon, 516 was long distance for me also. My fiance's parents live in New Hyde Park, and we're in Queens, and they're 15 minutes away, but it counts as long distance. He calls them up to 100-150 minutes worth, so the 200 mins. long distance included in MCI would cover that.

I just signed up to AT&T (don't have OptOnline ). They offered me regional service for $24.95 which includes unlimited calls within Nassau and NYC. It cost $12.50 a month to add call-waiting, caller-ID and 3-way calling.

Re: Phone Company?

Well, I called up MCI, and they checked the numbers that I dial most to see if it counts as local, and all of them did including 212 numbers, except for fiance's parents' who are 516. But that's the same that it was with Verizon. For my first month, I get half off the local package, so I can see how much it'd come out to with some savings, so if it seems like it'd be high regularly, then I can cancel then.

i signed up for the 29.99 thing with mci as well- so far so good. But we mainly use our cell phones the most anyway.

I have the Verizon plan that is unlimited local and long distance for $60 per month. After all the taxes and charges that are mandatory (federal fees and whatnot that they should just be honest about upfront and tell you will be added to your bill) I pay about $86/month for local and long distance.

We have AT&T's basic package and call waiting. After all the taxes and fees, we pay $43/month.

We switched from Verizon, where we had the same exact plan (literally no difference in the plans!) and we were paying about $75/month.

Re: Phone Company?

we signed up about 3 weeks ago for Optimun Voice for $35 a month. We can call ANYWHERE in the US and Canada for as long as we want!! Great deal!

Just cancelled my Verizon phone service...$72 a month and no long distance. Also, they have a recording that says what my new number is!!

Ugh, I have a $35 plan for unlimited local calls for Verizon, and it always comes out to around $70. It's ridiculous. I hope the MCI bill comes out better.

Great Topic!

For the past several days I have been researching this topic.

I am looking at the Optimum Voice - question though - they told me they don't wire your house for multiple phones - how did you handle this?

Re: Phone Company?

I read that too! Can't you splice it and run the cable perhaps? I don't know squat about any of this..

Lisa Rose Posted:

Re: Phone Company?

there is a way to splice the cable line and have it go to seperate area...DH was telling me how he thinks it can be done but all I was hearing was 'BLAH, BLAH, BLAH....' LOL

the way we get around it, is that we have a V-tech (I think) phone and the base unit gets plugged into the cable moden and each handset is a wireless unit to the base. Even with the regular phone service...we do not plug seperate hand sets into the phone jack in the wall...just plug the charging base into an outlet.

I hope that helps!
