Photographer Help

Hi everyone. So I have to ask a question about photographer. I got a quote at $3000 for a videographer and photographer. That includes the bridal album, parent album, thank yous, and whatnot. My mother thinks that I am insane for spending that much and doesnt think I should do it. She also doesnt think I should do a videographer at all bc she says no one will ever look at it. However, I havnt found anywhere cheaper. She also keeps telling me I should save in ways like not having a limo, not having favors, doing my own hair...things like that. She says wedding prices are out of control these days and if I want to buy a house I need to save my money. Anyways, I'm just like really upset over the whole situation and I dont know what I should do. Does anyone know, is this a good price???? Should I just spend the money on everything and be happy??? or should I save in some or all of these areas. This planning is so stressful!!! If anyone has any advice, ideas, tips I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks :)

Wow...photo and video together for $3000? That's a STEAL! The photographer I'm going with is $3000 alone, and the videographer is almost $3000 too...and those were really reasonable prices compared to others I saw.

If you think you're going to regret not having certain things when you think back on your day in the future, then you might as well get them now and spare yourself the anguish later.

My FH and I are also saving for a house, but we're willing to spend a little extra for this special day of ours...that's the way we see it. The day of the wedding is going to be so stressful that the last thing i want to think about is doing my hair and make-up...find someone reasonably priced and 'splurge' on it...it'll be worth it!!

Finally, if I came to your wedding and didn't get a favor, I'd be pretty upset.

that is an amazing deal for a photo/video package!
u got a a steal! we paid 4k for a very basic photo/video package.

favors are not necessary, you can do without them. we didnt give out favors. DH and i made a donation to a charity and put a frame on each table telling our guests that we donated to a charity in lieu of giving out favors.
we did our wedding on a budget too.

good luck!

In all honesty, that is an excellent price - and I am a very budget-concious bride!

I would almost wonder who is doing photo and video for that little amount of money. Photo and video are the things you take AWAY from the wedding, not the limo or flowers.
This might sting a bit, but your mom is right and wrong. It is your wedding, do what makes you and FH happy! You WILL get a house someday. Unless you are spending $100,000 on your wedding don't worry. Just because you spend an extra $2000 on photo or $100 on hair will NOT make a difference on whether or not you get a house in the future. LI weddings are expensive.
Our parents talked us into having a LI wedding and then tried to get us to spend no money on it. We did what we wanted (w/o going overboard) and people are still commenting on our wedding. We had fun and our guests had fun, that was the point!
Do what you want, what makes you happy.

$3000 for a photographer AND videographer is an amazing price! If you liked his work I would grab him in a heartbeat! We are paying $3300 for both but thats only b/c the company we're using knows my brother and our DJ (my brother and the DJ are the ones who recommended this company). Definitely snatch these people up!

THats an EXCELLENT price!! Many of us have spent and are spending more than $3000 just for photography!! That really is a STEAL and your mother has no clue what she is talking about!!! That is by no means a lot of money!!

In my opinion, it's the photos and video that you want to spend the most money on besides your RH.

Re: Photographer Help

I can see your mothers point. A lot of this wedding business is a big rip off. I started out wanting to do everything myself to save $ but I started realizing that there's so much to plan & do that it's just easier & less stressful to just give in & pay for stuff.
It's really hard, I paid for most of our wedding so I know how it is.
You just have to decide what's important to you.
You do get a lot of $ in the end but you don't always break even (we didn't ) so make sure you don't put yourself too much in debt.
But i would say splurge a little just because you don't want to regreat anything, it is one of the biggest days of your life that you only do once.
Just try to find deals on each thing you book & ask everyone on here for advice, that's what I did & saved a lot of $$
I have to say I'm glad the engagement is over
it was a stressful time but it's worth it

Thank you so much everyone!!! Reading everyone's posts made me feel better. I think I'm just going to go with the photographer. I know they are good because they did my coworkers wedding which I was at and I loved her proofs, so I'm just going to do it. Thanks again so much and good luck to everyone!!!

Thats a great price!! I paid 6k for both
Yes wedding prices are out of control but there are other ways to cut costs. You could DIY your invites, DIY CPs, go with cheaper flowers, that kind of stuff. Have a friend do your hair/MU if you know someone.

Yes, that is a good price. But I understand what your mom is saying. Trust me if you can save $$ by not having a videographer (have a friend with a camcorder do it). That money can be put somewhere else.

Well, if they were able to keep the frame, isn't that technically a favor?

That is a really good price. I haven't seen anything less than that either. Who gave you the quote? You can FM me if you don't want to share on here.

There are so many ways you can help reduce the cost of things. Go with low CPs, flowers that are in season, invites don't need to be so expensive, are there any DIY projects you can do?

I think that is a great quote you received for pictures and video...just make sure the package has everything you want...and keep in mind you may to add more pictures later on..which will increase the price...In the beginning I didn't want a wedding video, but after some coaxing from my mom..I changed my mind..I'm glad I did because I didn't remember anything from the wedding it went so fast....I can know watch the video..good luck....

that is a great price - you cant go wrong. you will have photos and a video for a long time to come.....i wish there was a video of my parents on their wedding day for me to watch - i think its cool that one day our kids will probably watch our video and look through our pictures. i always look at my parents and FH's parents wedding things. its a big part of your family history. for me, it was the last place i skimped and we splurged and got a photographer that we really really wanted.

dont worry about your Mom. she is just trying to look out for you.

good luck!!

Thanks again everyone! The quote I got was from T and T Studio for those of you who were asking. My coworker used them and I loved her proofs.

I think she means that there was a framed note on every table - just one - to explain that the bride and groom are donating to a charity in lieu of favors. I've seen this at many weddings and personally would rather know that the couple gave to a good cause than give me coasters, candy, or a candle I will never use. (I've yet to get a useful favor at a wedding, JMO.)

Re: Photographer Help

on the newlywed board there is a thread about what the brides did for the wedding that they feel in retrospect was not needed. you might try looking for that to see areas you could ignore. If I remember correctly several mentioned cry packs, slippers, bathroom basket.
you really can skip favors. As someone said do you really get things you are delighted with. I know brides put alot of effort into selecting something nice but I think they often fall short of the mark or you spend so much per item. I'm sure most guests won't mind not getting one.
you will read on the boards about girls doing alot of projects and I think getting frazzled by all the work - - like making I DO letters or aisle runner. Your wedding day is about marrying the person you love not about all the little odds and ends.
As people say the day goes so so fast. the best is to keep it simple. I bought kits at Micheals and printed my invitations. Since my 'theme' was roses I decided to make rose lollipops but prior to that I was going without. I bought one of those pretty papered boxes with a handle like a small suitcase and used that for my card box and it is now my 'memory box' to keep all the cards an small wedding items in. It's a better size than the card chests you see and it's now tucked away in a dresser drawer. I used the RH menus and table numbers, did not send out RD invites, jusat asked the people to come and did not print up special envelopes for tips - - I used leftover RSVP envelopes, nice size to fit in tux pockets.
So you can save money and time by keeping it simple.
BTW that photog quote does seem very good - - do you get negatives with that, and how many pics in the album?

That is a good deal, i'm paying more than double!
Good find. As for everything else, do what you are comfortable with. Times have changed, I know most 'older' people think we are nuts with what we spend. But in the end its your day and you and FH have to be comfortable with the money aspects the day. I think calling around and getting price quotes and then showing your mom that you are getting good prices might help.
Good luck and have fun!!!
