Photographers - anyone just get negatives & skip albums?

Photographers - anyone just get negatives & skip albums?
So the search for a photographer has been an eye-opener for me... My current thought is to hire a good photographer for the day and make sure we get all the negatives and/or a CD with high-res digital images. We'll skip all the prints, albums, etc. for now, then try to put together some nice stuff on our own.
Is this a totally crazy idea? Has anyone else done it this way? How do prices add up as compared to what photographers want? Obviously, you don't get all the fancy-schmancy albums, but is it possible to do something nice for a nice price?

Me me me me me me me!!! I could care less about an album and they are SO overpriced anyway. Thats something I could do on my own with adobe photoshop etc. Id rather spend my $ elsewhere.
I went with 12th night! They are very reasonable and very sweet!

We are making our own albums. My photographer is a freelance photojournalist, and she is charging us a flat fee for the entire day and as many pictures as we want with a minimum of a 1000. We own our negatives and she gives us our proofs as 4x6's with a white border around them. She will even order us the supplies to make albums wholesale. She's awesome. Thats what we did through 12th Night. Now we are taking our time/saving for albums - no need to come up with the extra $ before the wedding!

yes, I got the negatives and uploaded them to snapfish and made my own $40 coffee table 'album'

We went with 12th Night because we can get our images on DVDs and then do what we want with them later and either order albums through them or on our own.

Does 12th Night give u your negatives?
What is the going rate for tow photgraphers and, negatives and pics only.. no albums? (For 12th Night)

ME! I'm a photo snob and want real quality, rich prints so I'd rather choose my own print house. Most photographers just print digital to save money and for me there is a noticeable difference - its just a cheaper process overall.
I pay attention to the type of film they use, etc. - greater detail than most. If you're opting for digital photography, then the album and prints don't matter. If the price is good, go for it.
PS - 12th Night is digital only. So no negatives. They do BW film but even that their printhouse uses color paper so...

our package is for the proofs and CD only. It's great that we have the option of adding things later on though - like when we get more $$$$$! lol

Its a GREAT idea & you save so much by doing that !!!
i used 12 Night - here are my pics they are all on DVD - i will make my own parent & family albums& prob just get 1 professional keepsake.
