I am so overwhelmed with the choice of photographers. I have no idea who to go see. I have read lots of great stuff on here about Duet and like the proofs that everyone posts, so I will go see them.. But who else? Help!

Re: Photographers: Where should I go?
I have heard people buzzing about Patken, Sherwood Triart, Fine Art, Silver Fox, Leli,
We will probably look at Patken, and Duet also Silver Fox. We are going to look at Sherwood Triart over the break.

Don't limit yourself to the vendors people use here. I'm sure there are amazing photographers who aren't advertising on here. I know there are some photographers who advertise in NY City that I like that will travel to LI.

So far we have been to Twelfth Night, Sherwood Triart and Cassarino. They are all great - we are having a hard time making a decision.

Re: Photographers: Where should I go?
I personally loved Artisan, and had a lot things I distinctly disliked about many of the 'popular' photographers on here.
You have to decide what ou like, Look at the ads in maagzines to find a style you like. Do you want it all shot on film or digital? How much are you willing to pay? Do you want it shot by the owner or one of a few photographers, or do you want 'Staff'? You kind of have to think about these things.
What i liked about Artisan, is first of all i loved the style, and the work was very consistent. I liked The staff, I felt that they were really accomodating and could answer my questions. I liked that the owner himself was the person i met with, the person whose albums I was viewing and the person who would shoot my wedding. I liked that they are all film. A bonus that I had not considered was that they scan all of the negatives into the computer so they can post proofs online, easily do B&W, Sepia, colorization and other effects, and make maagzine albums, all with the depth and richness of film. I absolutely did not want my wedding shot digitally. you lose a lot of depth and richness that way.
Also, all of the albums (even maagine style) are actually photographically printed, not inkjetted like some...

I agree. Any photographer in the NY metro area will go anywhere for a price.

Re: Photographers: Where should I go?
I am using a city photographer who is not charging me to come out to LI.
As for what to look at, I think before looking you should think about a few things and then you can narrow down who you see.
Some photographers specialize in traditional posed pictures, others specialized in candids or photojournalism. Definately take a look at websites to decide which you like better.
Also, several photographers offer multiple photographer packages. The advantage to this is that they have several angles of things like the ceremony and the toast. The downside is they are of course more expensive. One thing I saw, if you decide on two photographer, go with a company that does this regularly. It does seem important for the photographers to be in synch.
Another thing to think about is do you care if a photographer takes digital or film cameras. One thing to realize, most photographers print their photos in the same way (all labs I talked to print digitally even if you take film pictures, they scan the negatives). The only exception to that is if a company prints their own in their own dark room and again this usually costs more.
The last thing to think about is price range. LIke everything else in the wedding process, there is a wide range of prices. From what I saw, the low prices ranged from 1000-2500, the mid price ranged from 2500-4000 and then the top level goes up to 10,000. The one thing I learned is to see multiple photographers in a range.
I saw 15 photographers because I really wanted to find the 'perfect' photographer for me
Hope this helps

Re: Photographers: Where should I go?
I ended up using someone who was not as well known. I found him on the weddingchannel. I met with him and I knew right away I wanted to use him. I still met 2 others who were more popular. It turned out the worked one of the popular companies was his! He left them and went out on his own.
I am so pleased with my choice. He was wonderful and his work was amazing!
The point of my story is, the bigger the name doesn't always mean the best!
Good Luck!

i totally agree!!! some of the most amazing photographers are never mentioned on this site and those who's work i think are ho-hum, are RAVED about here. so its all a matter of preference. go on theknot.com and look at all of their NYC photographers---there's a ton of them.
